I recently purchased an MS-401 and a System Sensor P2RL and am new to fire collecting. What should I do first: buy more or wait? I want to have a functional system in the garage but don’t know what to add. Smoke alarms panel or 2 wire only is this legal in Canada or not?
By “functional” do you mean for actual life safety?
You can say that, as that building passed inspection, without any fire protection it’s a detached garage from the house
Just saying: there’s a difference between a demo system & a life safety system: the former as its name implies is only for demonstration & fooling around with & all that, while the latter is strictly for actual protection of life as its name implies (& thus the latter kind must be professionally installed & conform to all applicable codes & laws).
Update I asked the my fire prevention officer which is the inspector for the city he says “I dont care with what you do with that system if it passed without out fire protection previously you’re ok to do whatever you want” so im just going to do it the way I want it to be
Its usually not good practice to put smoke detectors in a garage. Especially if there are vehicles and small engines being run in there. The dust and dirty environment may cause nuisance alarms. Heat detectors are a better choice for this application.
You’ll want to get a panel, preferably newer for actual life safety. It’s not required to be installed and serviced by a fire alarm technician company in a house, although highly recommended. (could be wrong about the last part for canadian installs, I am from america) You’ll need to do your homework to get caught up on NFPA codes, and local jurisdictions. For someone of your skillset as far as I can tell, you should go with a licensed fire alarm installation company if you are serious about life safety.
After some research and talking to the fire chef he came out to go see whats the best idea his response was basically
“Install a residential smoke detector right next to the fire alarm system smoke detector”
So that is what im going to do thanks for the help and information maybe later on I will pick away at the system and aswell learn my codes thanks for the help
Awesome, if you need suggestions on panels let me know.
