Wheelock 7001-DL???

Your neglect to read previous posts before writing your own is really irritating me.

I didn’t actually buy them. I think I know what alarm you’re talking about though. Here’s a picture of one in an abandoned hospital (Kidde system with RSG t-bars installed in 1991):

Yep that’s it. Any idea about the model number or anything else?

I have one, the ES-EL1-WS-24. I got it from someone on the other forums. However, it doesn’t have that sound like the alarms in UAlbany, it has a high-pitched siren like sound like there alarms:

Sadly it doesn’t have the mystery sound we’re wondering about, which BTW is a strange yelp-like tone. There was a video on YT but it was made private.

Very fascinating catalogs there, especially the late 80’s one. And I’m definitely intrigued by these “electronic signals”. I recently saw the one with the 7002T-style strobe in an apartment building near me. Fire Alarm Fan, have you checked to see if there’s a possible way to change the tone on those signals? I do remember the UAlbany video - that was quite possibly the strangest alarm sound I’ve ever heard!

Those catalogs are cool! I know Standard and Couch used the Wheelock 34 horns in the mid/late 1970s (prior to their Faraday buy-outs!) Standard even updated their light plate with a grille that would fit better with the 31/34.

The 1979 catalog is also interesting. I can see how Wheelock pioneered the horn/strobe. When did Wheelock start making EH horns? I think it was some time in the 1980s as well; I’ve seen a few 1980s systems with those horns behind SAE AV32 strobe plates. I know the MT was out since the early 1990s, when the 7002T was still in production.

Failed to mention, it only has 3 tones, like this AES:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrsQP0coQ4c&list=FLadOO7yDkqJ5t3qNhYFssFw&index=678 - Siren
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDWJLpnT4TY&list=FLadOO7yDkqJ5t3qNhYFssFw - Warble
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hrUd5H-Ff4&list=FLadOO7yDkqJ5t3qNhYFssFw - Horn

So what you have is basically an early version of the AES? Interesting. I guess that means the alarms in UAlbany were something different with the same casing. There’s also a mention of “slow whoops” in that catalog (alongside the speakers) - the UAlbany tone wasn’t a slow whoop, but maybe those types of signals can also generate a tone like that? Or it could be some sort of vibratory horn as Dan had guessed.

I haven’t seen that vid in years, but it might have been a slow whoop coded by the FACP. If those slow whoops use peizos rather than sounders or speakers, that’s probably what it would sound like.

There are actually some of those older Wheelock electronic horns for sale on eBay (from seller Toomanyamps), these ones being audible-only versions with semi-flush grilles.

I actually went ahead and bought one these! I will upload a test of it later, but for now, here are some pictures:

Awesome! I’m really eager to hear it and will probably also be purchasing one in the near future. Definitely a really cool and more uncommon alarm.

As I promised, here is a test of the Wheelock ES-DL1-R:

What a cool device! I’m going to buy one!

Very neat - thanks for posting! Now, if only we could figure out what those UAlbany alarms were…

Is there a link to this UAlbany video? I’ve gone through all of WeatherDan’s stuff, and haven’t seen anything but speakers, strobes, and bells.

It was posted on YouTube a few years ago by someone who lived in one of those dorms, but the video has now been made private.

simplex 2903/2904s came out between 1976-1979.

Got the wrong topic there.
