Yeah I heard they edited that on some PBS affiliates. Thank god the PBS stations in my area show the episode uncut (and by that I mean with the fire horns intact).
On the Discovery channel show Deadliest Catch, you can frequently hear alarms sound on the boats and occationally see them. On The Northwestern you can see a cieling mount ET-LSM in the galley, and frequently can hear a Vibratone 350 blast when a crab pot is about to be launched over the side. You can also see one of the 350s in the galley near the engine room on occations. On the Time Bandit you can hear bells ring when ever the boat’s general alarm sounds (which has happened a few times, including when the crew witnesses a man fall overboard from another boat). On The Wizard, especially when the fresh water supply pipe burst, you can hear what could be an ET doing slow whoop (no voice, just the whoop), while the crew is trying to stop the leak. You can also see typical battery home smokes near the sleeping quarters, one on the Cornila Marie is usually always disconnected.
This is from a few years ago, but since it’s not here now, I’ll bring it up:
A segment on Letterman a few years ago had Rupert Gee go ghost hunting in the theatre, and during the hunt, they test the fire alarm system. All that’s heard is an announcement saying they’re doing testing. Strobes are Wheelock WMT-24s, and a vandal-resistant ET speaker can be seen next to the strobe in the back of the room. Doesn’t sound like the announcement came from the system speakers.
Alarm part is at 1:15. Note how he refers to the strobes as “the emergency lights”.
On last night’s Verminators they were at an apartment complex which had what appeared to be BRK 4919 smokes, and GX-90S mini horn strobes and Spectras on the outside.
I am surprised this forum didn’t mention the “Hey Arnold” yet! There were three episodes with fire alarms, all at PS 118 and using bells in Continuous, and the pull stations are kinda large with a long T-bar -style handle that is usually red on top and white on bottom.
“False Alarm:” A false fire alarm occurs and Eugene is the prime suspect. We see a kid’s peanut butter-covered hand pull the fire alarm (in this one it says “FIRE” on top and “ALARM” on bottom, and it says “PULL” on the lever), and then the bell sounds (it’s basically the same as the school bell), the kids gasp, Sid yells “FIRE!!!” and they run out panicking as Principal Wartz calls out “Stop! Stop! It’s a false alarm!” He then says to himself “Wait until I get my hands on the kid who pulled that alarm.” So he finds Eugene in a closet after finding footprints leading away from the pull station, and they have a trial as they attempt to prosecute Eugene. So the student jury, consisting of Arnold, Gerald, Helga, Pheobe, Harold and Curly, does their duty, and all but Arnold thinks that Eugene is guilty. So then Arnold is sure Eugene is innocent and he explains the possibilities that Eugene could have been framed (someone could’ve tripped Eugene, stole a sample of his peanut butter, pull the fire alarm, shove him in the closet, and leave a Wankyland pencil that Eugene borrowed as evidence!) At this point Curly confesses he did it as revenge since Eugene ruined Curly’s Wankyland pencil. He said “I had to do something. So I got this plan, see… the fire alarm! I’d pull it, and then I’d frame Eugene for the crime!” So the court finds Eugene innocent, and Curly is turned in. As Principal Wartz drags Curly down the hall he says “So you admit you pulled the fire alarm.” Curly says in a demented voice “Thaaat’s right… I DID IT! I pulled the FIRE ALARM! And I’d do it again, too… see?” Then we cut to outside the school as we hear Curly laugh maniacally as the fire alarm rings and we hear the pull stations being pulled.
“Eugene Goes Bad:” This time, Eugene DOES pull the fire alarm for real! He’s become a juvenile delinquent, and he stands near a pull station (this time the lettering on it reads “IN CASE OF FIRE PULL DOWN”), and Eugene pulls it, and like last time, it’s a bell in Continuous. The kids scream and run out of the school, and Principal Wartz comes out and resets the alarm system (by simply pushing up the lever Eugene pulled!) He then scolds Eugene saying that it is a direct violation of the school policy, but Eugene just says something like “Whatever” and leaves.
“Back to School:” Arnold’s Grandpa Phil (voiced by Dan “Homer” Castellaneta) is back in elementary school, going to P.S. 118 with Arnold and his friends. Phil is in sixth grade and acting really tough and mean (actually if you look at it that way, seeing an 81-year-old troublemaking man in a sixth grade class full of kids aged 10 to 12 IS pretty funny), and after doing something bad again, Wartz says “Report to detention after the final bell.” “Report THIS, Wartz” Phil sneers as he pulls the fire alarm (same bell in Continuous, same pull station design as last time but now with “PULL” and “FIRE” on it). Wartz runs in and pushes up the lever to silence the bells. “That’s it! I’m calling his parents!” Wartz says.
Yeah, Hey Arnold! has been brought up here before. And btw, in that very first ep, it’s not Eugene who shouts “FIRE!”, it’s Sid. The alarm is actually pulled a 3rd time in the series too. When Arnold’s grandpa (Phil) decides to go back to grade school to get his diploma, he turns gangster in the process, and after leaving Principal Wartz’s office (after beight caught spraypainting a school dumpster) he mouths back and and Wartz says “Report to detention immediately following the final bell.” and Phil says “Report this, Wartz.” and pulls the alarm. But it only goes off for a split second, because like the previous time, Principal Warts just pushes the pull back up and the alarm stops ringing. And just for kicks, he then says “That’s it! I’m calling his parents…”
All that: one time coach Kreeden (sp?) subs and after getting his hand smashed in something, he runs around the room out of control, and inthe process, pulls the alarm in the room (which represents something of a BG-8). Bells are heard in a pulse pattern, but they only go off for a few blasts. Then Dany Tamberelli grabs a fire extinguisher and begins assaulting the coack with it and then finally, the fire department arrives and blasts the coach w/ the fire hose, which send him through the wall. On another ep, there’s no alarm, but after getting his hand caught in a locker, a girl grabs the fire extinguisher and begins spraying it at him.
28 Days: alarms throughout the rehab facility are MT horn/strobes. Pulls can be seen as well, but I can’t remember if they’re BG-10s or Edwards classics. Alarms never go off.
As I mentioned on the older forums, there is an MA12/24D on The Secret World of Alex Mack, S1E__, “False Alarms". A YouTube vid has been posted of the ep.
As you can see, a MA12/24D on a WBB backbox can be seen at 2:42, and a 270*PO can be seen at 2:25. Surprisingly, or unsurprisingly the sound is a 10" bell in a slightly faster Pulse.
More 270SPOs. It even shows the break rod break!
NOTE: The user who posted these mislabeled the episodes, so it might change.
Why do the live-action Nickelodeon programs always mess up the fire alarms? In “Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide,” they have Wheelock MT-24-LSMs in the hallways, but in the episode “Emergency Drills” when the alarm goes off, suddenly it’s a bell. The same error also occurs on “Zoey 101!” At first I thought this was a goof that only the crappy (IMO) Teenick shows did, but now I know that the much better 1990s live-action Nick shows did it too!
“My Life as a Teenage Robot” also had a fire alarm in it in the episode “Class Action,” when one of the bad girls fires a hair pin into XJ-9 (a.k.a. Jenny’s) laser, and it malfunctions and causes the whole school to catch fire. The alarm is a continuous bell. Luckily the sound editors made it sound different from the regular school bells (the regular bells sound like 6-inch bells, and the fire alarms sound like 10-inch bells).
It seems the only times I know when Nickelodeon used buzzers/horns for fire alarms was in the “As Told By Ginger” episode “Cry Wolf” (4050-like horn in 30 BPM March Time), and the “Rocket Power” episode “Falsley Alarmed” (a mix of a bell in Continuous and a horn in March Time with a bunch of flashing red lights on the ceiling, this was at the Shore Shack.) Coincidentally, both shows were produced by Klasky-Csupo productions (the studio that produced “Rugrats” and the pre-1992 “Simpsons” episodes), but I guess “As Told By Ginger” was meant to be more realistic and serious than the other Klasky-Csupo cartoons, which tend to often get a little weird or cartoony at times.
in the movie Cellular, the guy breaks a glass cover, and pulls a 270-SPO, which actually latches, and you can hear either Simplex 10 inch, or Wheelock 6 inch bells in continuous.
The average person doesn’t know crap about fire alarms. Most don’t even know what happens when you pull one, much less what notification appliances are or what they should sound like.
That is kind of disappointing in a way for me, because people should at least know what exactly happens when an alarm is pulled.
The notification appliance part I can understand, though.
on an episode of ICARLY its the 50th web show spectacular and sam gets detention so then carly and freddie try to get detention so carly is about to pull the fire alarm which is an edwards 270-SPO but she’s afraid so she throws a shoe at it and for some reason it go’s off and whenit did the bells(of course) go off!
In the movie 102 Minutes That Changed America on History Channel at 1:15ish minutes in (including commercials) you can hear the WTC alarms… interesting alarm!
