There is a YouTube series that I watch âIs It A Good Idea to Microwave This?â They are in a dorm, in with an SAE VA4 can be seen in the bedroom. (The show and dorm takes place in Massachusetts.)
On tonightâs Late Night with Conan OâBrain, he takes an audience member on a fast paced tour of the NBC studios at Rockerfeller center. They were just exiting the SNL studios, in a narrow hall and as they head to a stairwell, Conan points to a Simplex T-bar next to the stairwell enterence which looked like someone put 2 stickers on, and says âfire alarm, donât pull itâ. Of course you could see E/ETs through out the building (the same ones heard when the alarm went off in the middle of taping about 2 months back).
This was mentioned on the old board, and I managed to find a clip of it on youtube. Sense this is more related to TV, I figured this was the appropiate spot to post it. Iâm sure some of us here, especially those of us who grew up in the 80âs like me remember the classic Nickelodeon show You Canât do that on Television. In a few of their episodes early on in the series run home smokes of the era were used in a few episodes, and could be seen in the backaround in the home shots. In the 1981 episode âsafety firstâ they have a scene, where one of the kids, whoâs name slips my mind right now (not one of the well known ones), wakes up his dad, Senator Lance Prevert (not exactly father of the year, espeically early on, when they protrayted him as a drunk), who was sleeping/passed out in his chair, to inform him the smoke alarm in the living room was sounding (Iâm leaning torwards passed out sense the smoke didnât wake him). And just what caused the smoke to sound, their cat peeing on the rug. So after Lance complains about nearly everything setting it off, including his cigars he asks the kid is anything wonât set it off. His answer, âit dosenât go off when thereâs a fireâ. So Lance hands him a book of matches, instructs him to play with them and burn the house down so he could get some rest. Of course as soon as the kid strike sone match the smoke stops.
Hereâs the Episode (itâs in 3 parts)
the scene starts at 4:53, right after a scene where another kid set off the dungon sprinkler system with a lit match, while chained up. at 5:01 they zoom in on the smoke. Any clue as to what it could be? (Fire Alarm Fan any idea on what it is?) Youâll also hear it again in ithe last scene, after the closing credits, in Mr. Dimeâs office (an early charactor on the show)after his secritary Miss Take poors a pot of scalding hot coffee in his lap
if you want to watch the 1st 2 parts just so you can at least get up to speed on the episode:
For those of you who watched this show regularly, youâll notice the intro is slightly different (the theme song [a jazzed up verson of the William Tell Overture] was the same through ot the series run).
Iâd also suggest if your going to watch them, do so with in the next day or so, sense these old Nick shows get yanked fast, thanks to the Viacom lawsuit from last year (Viacom is the parent company of Nick), even though Nick didnât produce them, nor do they own the rights to them (Carlson Productions out of Ottawa Canada does, [the show was originally a local Canadian show before Nick picked it up in 1981] ).
I know! And thatâs really rare with TV and movies. I saw a movie called âJingle All the Wayâ where a First Alert 83R was sounding in 90BPM march time, and sounded halfway between a brass âsquealerâ and an 874-N5. Strange soundâŚ
They probably used a recording of the smoke, so it wouldnât drownout the actors as they read their lines. Iâm sure they would of had a problem getting it to sound and stop on cue. Also this show was very low budget, especially early on, so they saved and used the recording for future episodes if needed. In another episode 4 kids, only one I clearly remember being in that scene was long time cast member Christene âMooseâ Mcglade, sitting in Barthâs burgery sleeping for some strange reason. Barth is at the cash register, and hears the smoke. He yells "FIRE! FIRE! . The kids all jump up, and start running for the exit. Barth stops them, and says âhey! just where do you thing you going!?!â Christene says âweâve got to get out of here Barth thereâs a fireâ Barth than says âoh no, no one leaves without payingâ they inform him that they didnât even touch their food (a wise choise). He said he didnât care they ha to pay for what they did or didnât eat. So of course the kids throw him some wads of cash and run out of there. After the kid leave, he checks to see if theyâre out of sight, than discharges a CO2 fire extinguisher into the kitchen, which silences the smoke. He than laugh about using the same food 3 days in a row, and about saving money on doing dishes. Oddly enough in later episodes youâd see an older First Alert in the background, than after awhile nothing.
Yeah, I know it was a recording. Iâm just saying that he really should be plugging his ears, either way. And yeah, they would definately have problems having it start and stop on cue. My old Sears did practically the opposite of âon cue.â
On Law & Order, in some scenes at the Precinct, Edwards 270s can be seen. On the show Emergency! (1970s), Dr. Mike Norton pulls a Fire-Lite BG-6 in one episode.
On "That's So Raven", there is a Simplex T-bar pull visible inside a school.
One time, during a commercial filmed in a hotel, there was a round Standard pull visible on the wall next to the room being accessed. There was another round Standard pull station in a commercial based in an office.
I have also seen Fire-Lite BG-10s on TV as well. I have yet to see a Johnson pull on TV.
Sincerely,

Not exactly fire alarm related, but there was a funny scene in this Rugrats episode involving one heck of a car alarm, complete with a Vibratone-like horn!
It occurs three minutes into the video. But I made up an alternate version of that scene if it were a fire alarm system! Itâd go likeâŚ
Angelica: Could you tell them they have to wear gorilla suits to work?
Charlotte: I could. (on phone) Yes, Jonathan, Iâm still here.
Angelica: And make them wear their underwear on their heads?
Charlotte: Honey, mommy has something important to discuss with Jonathan.
Angelica: (walking backwards) And can you tell them they have to walk backwards all day?
She bumps into a fire alarm pull station and the T-handle goes down, setting off the fire alarm; it has a buzzer with a red light flashing underneath and then a male voice goes over the PA system.
PA Voice: Attention. Attention. Attention. An emergency has been reported. All occupants walk toâŚ
Angelica: Hey Mommy, neat! A fire drill!
Charlotte: Thatâs nice sweetie. (in phone) What? Not you, Jonathan, you know I wouldnât call one of my employees âsweetie.â At least not since the last Thomas series.
PA Voice: âŚdo not use the elevators. Walk to the nearest stairway.
Suddenly more alarms begin, which includes a loud continuous bell, a siren-like slow whoop repeating, and a pulsing high screeching tone as strobes begin flashing. The building begins violently shaking.
Charlotte: (yelling into phone) I canât hear you! A fire alarm just went off!
Tommy: WAAAAAAAAAAH! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Charlotte: Itâs a Zone 3 pull station on level 2, Jonathan. Have it reset!
Tommy: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
They get in the elevator and the noise and lights fade away.
Charlotte: (to Tommy) Itâs all right. No more bells.
Tommy cheers up.
For those wondering, itâs a huge Simplex fire alarm system powered by three 4100 panels and a 2001. Iâll describe the system in detail on the âMake up a Systemâ thread.
In Hitman (2007) there are several European call points. Then at 21:02 Agent 47 (the main protagonist) triggers one by an elevator, activating a 10" bell and Sound Effects & Royalty Free Music | SoundDogs this Slow Whoop.
In the Goosebumps TV special âWerewolf Skin,â thereâs a Simplex T-bar pull in the classroom during a school scene. I canât tell what kind it is, but it looks like a 4251-20
My girlfriend bought the 1st season of Emergency! last week, and in the pilot episode they show the infamous buzzer you hear after the stationâs tones. Those of you who donât know what Iâm talking about http://dogwood.phpwebhosting.com/~tvshrine/Emergency/ebuzzer.wav
The tones (the 1st 2 eeeeorrrr! before the âbuzzerâ) which is known as Quick Call 1 (2 tones playing simomtaniously per sequense QC 2 used one tone per sequense) were real LA county tones (Station 50, even the dispatcher heard was a real LA county dispatcher, and real radio transmissions were often used as well), the buzzer they showed under the intercom, which was not shown in station 51, was a surface mount Fire Horn seen in station 10 (they started in station 10 than moved into 51). The sound I suspect is a 4050. Also in various episodes you can frequently see a BG-6 in the background in Rampart General hospital, and in one episode after a fire breaks out in a patentâs room near their O2 tank, one of the doctors pulls one of the BG-6s. It of course goes automaticly back up (probably just used the shell one one) and a weak sounding buzzer sounds a code, which sends Firefighter Gage and DeSoto to the room with a fire extinguisher where they put the fire out.
The Apprentice: Most office buildings the people are in have E70 Speaker/Strobes.
iCarly: In some episodes, a 270-SPO can be seen by Carlyâs locker.
9News: During a story about a fire at Bear Creek HS, you can hear SpectrAlerts (maybe) doing Code-3 in the background.
