Fire Alarms in Buildings (2.0)

Update: Those empty junction boxes have indeed been filled… with GC-series remote speakers. Seems like they don’t want to rely solely on the PA anymore.

The remote strobes in those common areas were also replaced with G4-series strobes, and a few speaker/strobes.

The rest of the system, including the older Genesis speaker/strobes in tenant spaces, remains intact.

A renovated condominium unit also has a SIGA-HRD and, interestingly enough, Wheelock E90 speakers.

Celia Cruz (Forked River) Service Area (Garden State Parkway) - Forked River, NJ

Panel: Notifier Addressable Panel (Likely an NFS-320)

Pulls: NBG-12LXes (Polling via FlashScan)

Detectors: None (that are visible)

AVs: P2RLs and SRLs

Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) - Melbourne, FL

Panel: Notifier NFS2-3030 tied to a Simplex addressable panel

Pulls: NBG-12LXes

Detectors: TrueAlarms

AVs: SPSWLs, SPSCWLs, and at least one MASS (probably disconnected)

This is a very odd setup.

Did you see the simplex panel?

That looks like they’re in the midst of an upgrade. I’ve seen pictures of this airport, and they had 2901-9838 horns on 4903-9101 strobe plates.

I’ve been there twice over the past few months and nothing has changed but who knows

Palace Theater, Stamford, CT:

  • Panel: EST3
  • Pulls: SIGA-278s (EST branded)
  • N/As: Genesis speaker strobes
  • Detectors: SIGA-PSes

I heard something coming from a nearby building, and turns out it was this Siemens voice evacuation system (Desigo Fire Safety Modular or Cerberus Pro Modular) going off at the Aria Condominiums (this is in Naples, FL). I believe it was being tested. (it was silenced shortly after I started recording)

Well, if you thought the Danbury Mall had a weird system? Well, I present to you all two systems from Stamford, CT that are very diverse!

Ridgeway Mall, Stamford, CT:

Photos are available on my Google Photos album

This building is divided into three blocks: the Staples block (2391-2299 Summer Street), the Stop and Shop/Michael’s/Marshalls/Old Navy block (2200 Bedford St and 2233 Summer St), and the office block (which spans Sixth Street and some of Summer Street).

This is a map of the location (edited by me):

Now, I will explain each block’s systems. But first, we will introduce the panel.

Old Panels: Multiple EST IRC-3s (located at each building entrance and security office)

New Panels: EST3 (located in security office and at the Marshalls building entrance)

  • Pulls: Fire-Lite BG-12s (Tyco-rebranded)

VI- Some Unique Restaurant Systems

  • The Capital Grille- Their system consists of SIGA-278s, Genesis horn/strobes, and SIGA-PS detectors

  • 4th Quarter: Nothing unique, just a normal system with BG-12s and Advances

  • Peter Chang: I do not know, maybe the Simplex system?

  • Pieology: The Simplex mall system is hooked up here.

  • New York Comedy Club: Simplex mall system.

  • Terra Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse: Simplex mall system as well.

VII- Movie Theater/Landmark Square Office Complex:

Family Fare Supermarket- Mandan, ND

Panel- Potter PFC-4064 (Replaced the building’s original Simplex 4004 that died a few years ago).

Notification Appliances- One Simplex 4903 mechanical horn strobe at the front of the store. There is also a TrueAlert remote strobe in the pharmacy and 4903 remote strobes in the bathrooms.

Pull Stations- One Simplex 2099-9754 at the front service counter

Detectors- There are a few Simplex duct detectors and conventional TrueAlarms

Fails- The panel is at the main entrance and is currently completely blocked by a stack of extremely heavy cases of water bottles. There is also an extreme lack of notification coverage (especially strobe coverage) throughout the store. This is because the only notification appliance throughout the entire main area of the store is the one 4903 horn strobe. That is also the only horn in the building (at least in the areas that customers are allowed to access).

Note- This building was built in the late 90’s and is sprinklered.

Gateway Shopping Center, Port Chester/Rye, NY

This post will cover only specific stores in this strip mall/shopping center.

Store 3: Old Navy
Panel- FA system is tied into security system
Pulls- BG-12s:

Store 4: Burlington Coat Factory
Panel- Some sort of ADT Unimode panel (judging by ADT LCD-80 annunciator)

Pulls- ADT BG-12s:

Alarms- SpectrAlert PC2RHs (ceiling-mounted Advances):

…and one L-Series horn/strobe with a blue lens for CO detectors (see the annunciator picture)

CO detectors- Kidde CO detectors:

Don’t think it being marked “FIRE” but being for CO alert & having a blue lens is in line with code…

That’s an improvement from the last one but the labels can’t be very visible (not to mention the fact that they’re sideways: maybe a sign next to the alarm would be better).

Going by the sign below it it’s likely a sprinkler bell instead: it rings when the sprinkler system operates.

Not sure that residential CO detector is allowed for use in a commercial building…

Activity Center, Mahoney SP, Ashland NE
System is a 4005, with an original 4003 attached. NAs are Simplex, can’t remember the model numbers. In the new rock climbing area, there are TruAlert speaker strobes.

College Of DuPage MAC Building
Panel
NFS2-3030, located in an electrical closet on the first floor, with a DVC (Panel is on a networked system and is set as node 9)
N/A’s
Wheelock E90’s, Wheelock E70’s, and Wheelock E50’s
Pulls/Detectors
Pulls are NBG12-LX’s, and detectors are FSP-851’s

The voice evacuation system sounds like a Siemens/Cerberus Pyrotronics MXL with the Temporal Code 3 beeps.

ShopRite, Stamford, CT:

Quick Facts:

  • Store built and opened in 2000
  • Part of the large Commerce Park shopping center

(I have posted this system before, but, there are some upgrades!)

The Produce section’s U-MCS strobes and U-MH-MCS horn/strobes have been replaced with L-Series LED horn/strobes during a renovation:

However, just one lone U-MH-MCS remains near the floral shop:

In the rest of the store, the original Siemens alarms remain:

And, finally, this is the FS-250 annunciator:

Interesting seeing the LED L-Series starting to be installed.

FYI, that is an annunciator for an FS-250, not an MXL
