Fire Alarms in Buildings (2.0)

Museum of Science and Industry (newly renamed Griffin Museum of Science and Industry)

Panel - Unknown (probably a 4100 series panel)

Detectors - New TrueAlarm smoke and heat detectors, along with some older TrueAlarm detectors (older pictured below)

Pulls - Not very many pulls, not even by exit doors, however the two pull stations that i did see were in the coal mine exhibit, and i have seen one in the toymaker exhibit. The first pull i saw in the exhibit was a rebranded older national time and signal pull station like this. not sure of original manufacturer, however this pull was rebranded by Simplex
simplex national time
(more pictures coming soon)
The second pull I saw was a normal Simplex t-bar, with what appeared to be a break-glass attachment. instead of the normal 4251-30 or 2099-9103 style, there was a box over the handle (key was still accessible) with a striker hammer attached to the side. the picture i have is very poor, but it is coming soon.

Notification Appliances - This building had a bunch of different types of Wheelock vandal-resistant remote speakers and speaker strobes inside, as well as E70 remote speakers and speaker strobes inside. The vandal-resistant NA’s include: Wheelock ET-80s in red and white, as well as remote speaker variants. There were also Wheelock ET-1080 WMs in red and white, as well as remote speaker variants. Last time I came, I remember seeing a Wheelock AS outside the food court, which is now removed.

I have not uploaded the pictures from my phone to my computer yet, so I currently dont have those, but expect them soon!

The various systems of John Ball Zoo
First up is the gift shop which is EST

Next is the South America section/reptile section

Next is the Africa section

I forgot where this one was.

The aquarium (I’d like to note the bell is the only audible device in there)

Where the frogs are

And, finally the hippo area

That’s an SP-series t-bar by RSG, Inc.: several companies have rebranded them including Simplex (likely because they don’t have their own metal pulls for outdoor applications).

Sounds more like a particular model of RSG RMS-series pull station to me: some have a box over the front of the station (specifically the handle area) in which is a piece of glass, & also a hammer attached to the side of said box.

Now removed? Did they put a new device in its place or is there now a blank cover plate where it used to be? (& why did they remove it?)

Ooh, rare WM-series MTs! (indoors & with newer Simplex t-bars no less!) Great find! (that sole Commander is nice too, especially since you really don’t find that many systems that have Gentex devices in general)

That’s odd…why do you suppose that’s the case?

Sounds like the name of a book or movie to me, heh.

Not sure why it was there in the first place, as when I was there last, I didn’t look out for notification appliances, but I did see a pull station with the glass cover in the toy maker section. there is now a cover plate where the AS used to be, may have been removed. I believe that the system was hybrid voice/horns at one point, and they may have completely switched to voice. Why do you think that all of the speakers are Wheelock vandal-resistant. there all indoors, and probably not at any risk of being vandalized.

Basin Electric Power Cooperative Headquarters Building-
Bismarck, ND

Note- This building is around 7 floors, depending on the part that you go in. This building was remodeled in the late 2010’s and has one of the last Johnson Controls rebranded Notifier systems. If this building was built any later, it probably would have gotten a Simplex system.

Panel- Johnson Controls IFC2-3030 (Rebranded Notifier 3030)

Notification Appliances- Red ceiling and wall mount System Sensor Spectralert Advance speaker/strobes in most of the building, and white ceiling mount L-series speaker/strobes in the office areas

Pull Stations- Johnson Controls JBG-12LX’s (Rebranded Notifier BG-12LX’s)

Smoke Detectors- Johnson Controls 2951J‘s

I believe you are thinking of the Johnson Controls 2951J smoke detector, which has a resemblance to FireLite’s SD355 detector

The Johnson Controls rebrand for the Notifier BG-12LX is the JBG-12LX, not the JBG-12LXP, which is the Portuguese version of the BG-12LX

Thank you! I’m not very familiar with these Johnson Controls products or really any Honeywell products. I changed both things.

Maybe just for additional toughness in the environment they’re in.

Highland Square Apartments & Offices/733 West Market–Akron; built around 1974

Panel: Simplex 4207/8 (or possibly a 4247–one of the last ones ever made) with 4300 annunciator

Initiating devices: Simplex 4251-20 (Same as my former high school); unknown ESL smoke detectors

Signals–Simplex 4037s (6VAC) with ugly Wiremold conduit sticking out of them.

That’s an ESL 523C (though it could also be the Simplex-rebranded version (4259-36) given the rest of the system is Simplex). The little silver disk on it is a heat sensor, so it’s also a smoke & heat detector.

thanks, I’m not very familiar with ESL detectors.

I believe these were added sometime in the 80s or 90s. I did not notice the heat sensor as there may be some that are just smoke only in this building. I had no idea Simplex rebranded these.

I wonder what the wire mold is doing. Is this system original to the building?

it is, but I believe the system may have been rewired at some point.

That is a very colorful label on that annunciator.

It’s almost as mix-matched like the Omaha Zoo is. I did a thread on some of the systems there, and I recently updated it. Fire alarms at Omaha Nebraska Henry Doorly zoo
My guess is that they had different contractors over the years as the buildings were built. Same with the zoo you are talking about as well.

There was another in the next room over, but if you notice under the stopper is a box cover. The pulls were removed in multiple places. One was even removed in the aquarium mentioned.

I am unsure. I’m thinking it’s due to the penguins in the next room over.

I was just reading that when you replied lol. Definitely the same case of multiple contractors over the years. Being there’s Fire-Lite, Notifier, some unknown system (the one with the Centuries had like Apollo looking detectors), etc

Yeah: buildings will often end up with mismatching devices due to service company changes over the years.

What? sigh… is that that “no pull stations needed if building is both sprinklered & detectored” crap again? (which I don’t believe for a minute as I’m sure manual stations are still plenty important)

What: to avoid spooking &/or deafening them?

Probably that, and when (the aquarium at least) was upgraded to addressable the NBG-12LX won’t fit and the other two are under little hut things

Most likely
