Fire Alarms in Buildings (2.0)

It depends on the library. Brockton has three: a main branch library and two smaller West and East branches. They all used to have Gamewell FlexAlarm systems with older-style Vibratone 450 horns.
The East and West Branch libraries had fire alarm upgrades, and went with horn/strobes due to their sizes (East Branch has SpectrAlert Advances, West Branch has Wheelock Exceders.)
But the main branch library was fully renovated and expanded in 2002, and had a voice-evacuation system installed. It is a Simplex 4010 system with a 4003 voice control panel (I imagine they went with this because they figured a 4100-series panel would have been overkill for a system set up this way.) There are TrueAlert speaker/strobes in many places, along with remote strobes in restrooms.

Oh, and another nearby library has red wall mount Wheelock E70 speaker/strobes, and I forgot the pull stations, maybe BG-12s.

Sounds like the exact same system that’s at my library in my city, but it’s been awhile since I’ve been there!

It’s also been a while for me.

The 2 libraries that I usually visit in my area do not have voice evac systems.
one has a fire-lite system with SpectrAlerts (both classic and advanced) the pulls are Fire-Lite BG-12LXs
the other one has a Simplex system with Truealert horn/strobes and 1 lone Simplex 4099-9003 pull at the front.

I don’t know why, but ALL of the libraries I’ve been too have SAE light plates…

Coincidence? I think not! :stuck_out_tongue:

The libraries I know of don’t have EVAC either–
Austin has a Radionics system with Gentex SHGs and GX strobes.
Rochester has Wheelock AS (replaced Simplex rectangular 4903s)

My library has SpectrAlert Advances (I’m assuming H/S) replacing 405X-8Ys.

As I said in a previous topic, I now work part time as a librarian’s assistant and the library that a work at still has its old system: Simplex 4051+4050-85 horn/lights. I also assume that at one time, all of the pulls were break-glass but most of them now are just single action.

Did you really make that comment? I don’t see your name in the topic.

Because the topic was LOCKED before she could comment.

I’ve just merged the topic with this one.

Well I did manage to see the pulls at my job this time around, and the are Single-Action Simplex pulls.

Angelo’s Italian Restaurant in Myrtle Beach, SC has both white and red SpectrAlert Advance Horn/Strobes depending on the location in the building. The dining area/entrance area has white, and the bathroom and kitchen areas seem to have had red alarms. Pulls were Fire-Lite BG-12’s. Probably more cost effective that way because I do believe white alarms are more expensive than red ones. I could be wrong on that though.

OH and today I was at a Walmart that had a Bosch system with voice evac. First time I saw it in person. They had ceiling mounted speaker/strobes. I don’t know what brand, but I want to say Wheelock. Their paging system/background music utilized the same speaker system which I knew of those capabilities beforehand. I thought it was pretty unique for a Walmart set up though.

As far as the hotel I stay at, I think I’ve covered that system before and I’ll be happy to tell you the name of the place after I leave. But I got some decent pictures this time, I’ll have to upload them when I get back because the WiFi is hit or miss here.

I just got back from a trip to Atlantic City, NJ, a city that was recently hit by Superstorm Sandy, causing many shoreline locations on the boardwalk to be rebuilt/repaired due to the damage suffered. The first night we ate at a place on the boardwalk called Landshark Bar & Grill. We ate outside, so I only saw the system briefly, however, I do know that it consisted of a 4010ES (first time seeing one of these), TrueAlert horn/strobes, and dual-action pulls. From what I saw, there were no smokes installed. The hotel we stayed at was the Resorts Hotel and their alarm system was interesting. I believe it’s a Simplex 4100U (or ES) system, but I have no visual proof of that. I believe it used to be an Autocall system as the pull stations on the ground floor were labeled Autocall (http://www.edwards-signals.com/images/lg/MPSR-Pull-Stationshttps://cdn.thefirepanel.com/legacy/3092_6fd21bb48ddcf136c9e6c757ef70e19b.jpg these are the type) and there were a couple of Autocall smokes installed as well. The signals on the first floor varied, but for the most part it was wall-mount Wheelock RSSs with Wheelock E90 ceiling speakers. However, in some places they did have E70 speaker/strobes, TrueAlert wall-mount speaker/strobes, and a couple of 4903 horizontal speaker/strobes. One small lobby area had non-ADA Federal Signal ceiling-mount speaker/strobes and i noted that one hallway has SAE AV32 light plates with what I assume were speakers behind the grille, so the first floor had quite a variety. On the hotel room floors, it was fairly uniform with Simplex 4099-9003 pulls, TrueAlarm smokes, and addressable ceiling-mount TrueAlert speaker/strobes! This was my first time seeing addressable Simplex signals, so I was quite impressed. The hotel rooms had TrueAlarm smokes with sounder bases and Wheelock E90 speakers.

So, there you have it. It was quite a unique trip!

I bet it was a very unique find! I saw them in the science building at the Penn State campus I spent my first year at. They had ceiling mount and wall mount addressable speaker/strobes. I was kind of surprised that it had a 4100U for such a small building. It could have easily gotten away with a 4010!

Well, addressable appliances are only compatible with the 4100 series.

True! But I don’t know if they even needed addressable appliances. Maybe just for convenience and selecting strobe intensities easily. I always wondered what message that system played. The default one wouldn’t make sense because it’s mostly one story with a few offices in the basement. I guess the world may never know.

Most colleges I find, tend to replace their older systems with speaker strobes. At least over here. CCRI replaced their Simplex 4051+4050-8Xs with SpectAlert Speaker Strobes on the ceiling.

Sometimes they do that, depending on the type of building. At Massasoit Community College they use regular horn/strobes (Space Age VA4s, SpectrAlert Advances and Wheelock Exceders), but I could see them eventually using speaker/strobes in the gymnasium and the auditorium.
