Fire Alarms in Buildings (2.0)

Natick Mall (Original section) - Natick, MA
Panel: EST3 (saw the annunciator at one of the entrances, it was displaying a Trouble condition)
Pull stations: EST 278B’s
Signals: Mix of wall-mount and ceiling-mount EST Genesis speaker/strobes. (white with “FIRE” lettering.) Wall-mount EST Integrity PowerSaver speaker/strobes in some stores. SAE VA4 speaker/strobes in older stores. Weatherproof/re-entrant EST Integrity speaker/strobe outside.
Smoke detectors: System Sensor 2251’s (probably the old addressable EST version*) in mall concourses and many stores. System Sensor 2551’s (also probably the old addressable EST version*) in older stores. EST SIGA detectors in newer stores and near one entrance.

*Yes, EST used to use System Sensor addressable devices.

I have never even seen an SAE VA4 speaker/strobe before in person and I would like to see one and hear it go off also.

They look identical to the horn/strobe version - there’s really no way to tell them apart unless you hear it go off or see the other notification appliances in the system.

Starbucks (Market Place Drive) - Waltham, MA
Pull stations: Fire-Lite BG-12LX’s
Signals: SpectrAlert Advances :x
Market Basket - Waltham, MA - Rather unusual system for my area.
Panel: Mircom FX-2000
Pull stations: MS-700 series
Smoke detectors: Mircom MIX-2251AP (I think)
Signals: Wheelock Exceder horn/strobes (mostly ceiling mount, with some wall-mount)

Well I just got back from my trip to Edmonton, and here are the systems!

Jeb’s No Frills in Beaumont has a EST QuickStart system, with EST G1-HDVM horn/strobes. One of the horn/strobes has a red trim plate. Pulls are all EST SIGA-270 with Stoppers.

AquaFit Centre in Beaumont has an EST system, with EST G1-HDVM horn/strobes, even one in the small single-toilet washroom :x Pulls are all EST SIGA-270.

Craig’s No Frills in Leduc has a Simplex 4007ES system, with Simplex 4906-9127 horn/strobes, most of them are on the ceiling and are hardly noticeable. Pulls are all Simplex 4099-9001, with Stoppers.

Leduc Recreational Centre has a Simplex 4100U system, with System Sensor P1224MC horn/strobes. Pulls are all Notifier MPS-950B/NFM-950B.

McDonald’s in Beaumont has a Simplex 4008 system with Simplex 4906-9127 horn/strobes. Pulls are all Simplex 4099-9001.

Mill Woods Recreation Centre has a Mircom FA-1025T system, with Edwards 881D-AW horns. Pulls are all Edwards 270-SPO.

Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre has a Simplex 4100U system, with red wall mount System Sensor SpectrAlert Advance horn/strobes, set to 30cd each. Pulls are all Simplex 2099-9754.

Telus World of Science has an EST3 system, with mostly General Signal MB10-24 bells on EST 403-5A-T strobe plates. Some places have Edwards MB10-24 bells on the 403-5A-R strobe plates, some of them are lone bells (no visual signal). The IMAX theater there has an Edwards 439D-10AWC bell. And in one of the hallways, there is a 439D-10AWC with a very rare Edwards 894B-001 remote strobe!! Pulls are all Edwards 270-SPO.

McDonald’s in Leduc has an EST system, probably an EST 6616, with in the restaurant an Edwards 6’ Durabel installed upside down, and the playplace, a Mirtone rebranded Edwards 439D-10AWC. Pulls are all Edwards 274-111.

Manluk Center in Wetaskiwin has an EST system, with EST G1-HDVM horn/strobes. Pulls are all newer EST 270-SPO.

The Donut Mill in Red Deer has a Fire-Lite MS-5UD system, with a Wheelock MBS-G6-24 bell inside under a MENU (I know that because I’ve saw the signal before), and outside above a sign, there’s an Edwards 439D-6AWC bell, hardly noticable. Pulls are both Edwards 270-SPO.

There are actually quite a lot of Mircom systems in Massachusetts
Only a couple of dealers versus the blanket coverage of most other brands

No shock, EST panels always are!!! The system in there is quite a mess to be perfectly honest. It looks like the hallways are trying to stick to the EST speaker/strobes EST smokes and pull stations, but there are a lot of Simplex pulls still hanging around, each store seems to be doing their own thing; some have Simplex signals, some have Edwards, some use System Sensor devices, some use Edwards-rebranded System Sensor devices, and the Sears still has those SD300-looking smokes hanging around. I’ve heard the speakers sound in the hallways a few times but not all the strobes flash, not all the speakers go off, the signals in the stores typically don’t… must be an interesting job to keep it running.

I went over to Butler early today to sign some releases so that I could get my medical records from there and in the Center House, the alarms were Wheelock AS horn/strobes with an Exceeder and a SpectrAlert Classic in some areas and an MT in a hallway tunnel. HOWEVER, the original building actually had older alarms there. These alarms were Simplex 4051 horns on 4050-80 light plates with no FIRE letting and I know this because a few of the Wheelock AS’s are mounted ON the 4050-80 light plates. I’m sure they are disconnected but it just feels like they were rushing when they mounted the AS’s on the plates. In the additions of the building, they are mounted on the wall but in the original part, they are mounted on the 4050-80 light plates.

My post is about the original section of the mall.
The new section has a Simplex system.

And I forgot to mention, one of the exhibits where it tests your strength uses an Edwards 340 Adaptabel (red).

The huge Lake County Fairgrounds Building has an unknown system (probably Edwards) with Gentex commander 3 horn strobes, even in the single toilet bathrooms :x :x :x. Pulls are MPSR-LP.

Walgreens has another edwards system, with an over-abundance of Gentex commander 1 horn strobes, as well as having them in the restrooms. Pulls are MPSR.

My old middle school (revisited b/c sis had a tour) has an unknown system (I didn’t see it), with Gentex SHGs in the hallways, and gx-90 horn/strobes in classrooms and bathrooms. Some of them have been replaced with Commander 1s and 3s. A couple areas have Federal Signal 450Ds with VALS strobe covers on them (I assume the entire school had them at one point). Pulls are MPSRs with one MPSR-LP beside the entrance.

The side with the Microsoft store and Wasabi and all those shops?
Yeah that’s been changed over to Simplex. I’m kind of curious why they didn’t stick with EST just for consistency because with a mall of that size, you HAVE to use staged evacuation with custom announcements to smoothly evacuate in an emergency, which means the control panels have to communicate somehow.

Barefoot Bay Water Park: Notifier system with SpectrAlert Classic Strobes and Horn/Strobes. Pull stations are Notifier rebranded BG-12s.

Providence City Hall has a really cool system and it was something I was really shocked to see. They have not upgraded yet and me thinking that this is the capital city would have upgraded by now but I guess not. Not sure how long the system is gonna stay up since I have a feeling it might be upgraded rather soon. Still it was kind of nice to see a system like that. They had remote Simplex 4050-80 lights with the FIRE letting spelled vertical on them below what I assume were Simplex 4051s which were mounted on the wall and not behind a grille or in the wall like one would normally expect. It was really nice to see the system though I doubt I will ever see it or a system like that again.

I guess I made a mistake, it was a bell/strobe.

That side was built in 2008 as an addition. The original part was built in 1994.

Walmart in Royal Oak has an EST QuickStart system, with EST G1R-HDVM horn/strobes. Pulls are all EST GE SIGA-270, some have stoppers.

Chapters in Crowfoot has a Notifier AFP-200 system, with System Sensor P1224MC horn/strobes. Pulls are all Notifier MPS-950B.

The Shoe Company in Crowfoot has a Notifier AFP-200 system, with Wheelock MB-G10-24 bells on Wheelock RSSP-24MCW strobe plates. Pulls are all Notifier MPS-950B.

CO-OP in Crowfoot has a Notifier NFS-320C system, with mostly System Sensor PC2W horn/strobes, that blend into the ceiling. There is one System Sensor P2R horn/strobe on a wall near the entrance. Pulls are all Notifier NBG-12LX

CO-OP in Rocky Ridge has a Notifier AFP-200 system, with System Sensor P1224MC horn/strobes. Pulls are all Notifier MPS-950B.

Ah I see. Either way I’m still a little surprised they switched to Simplex. EST has made some remarkable improvements since the EST2 (although they’re still not my first choice in panels), and since EST and Simplex are competitors they do not design the panels to communicate with eachother. I’m curious how they make the staged evacuation procedure work across the 2 brands; it’s probably not as easy as slapping an EST monitor module or 2 on the alarm relays of the Simplex panel.

Former National City Bank | Vernon Hills, IL

FCI FC-72 Control Panel (4 zones, 12 zone cabinet)

AES Intellinet / Keltron 7750-F-4X4 Wireless Transceiver (16V power supply and power supply in additional cabinet)

5 FCI MS-2 Pull Stations (1st floor: main entrance, south exit/panel room/staircase, west exit/staircase. Lower Level: south staircase, west staircase)

1 FCI HP + FSL Horn/Strobe (Lower Level break room/south staircase)

1 Federal Signal 450D Series D1 + Federal V1971 Horn/Strobe (Main entrance)

1 Federal Signal 450D Series B4 Horn (Lower Level west staircase)

2 Federal Signal 450D Series C2 Horns (1st Floor south and west exits)

This system used to be installed in this building… I purchased and removed all devices on Monday.

theboginator, I’m pretty sure that the fire alarms aren’t connected at all between the old and new sections. The sections are basically 2 separate structures, so there’s no need to connect the fire alarm systems to each other. Meaning that if the fire alarm goes off in the new section, everything in the old section can go on as normal. And vice versa.
