I think most users just aren’t interested in making fire alarm fanfiction. I posted here a couple times when I first joined, but it doesn’t really appeal to me anymore. I think it’s fine to keep this thread around for those who like to, but don’t expect it to stay very active.

I do however enjoy adding fire alarm systems to my building projects in Second Life. Might be something to look into if you’re interested in architecture or creating replicas.

This is somewhat of a retraction of my earlier post on the alarm systems at the schools in Todd Strasser’s books (the “Help! I’m Trapped In…” and “Don’t Get Caught” series). I have read more of them, so now I have a better idea on what they’d be like, particularly the first…

The Burt Itchupt Middle School (often referred to by it students as the “Burp It Up” school) was built in 1988, to support the increasing number of middle schoolers in Jeffersonville. (It’s actually mentioned in the 1993 book, “Help! I’m Trapped in My Teacher’s Body.” The year isn’t mentioned, but it does say it was “pretty new. They built it about five years ago.”)
The main fire alarm panel is a Simplex 4002, the double-bay version set on Fast March Time, installed in the main office. A Simplex-branded SAE annunciator is in the main entrance.
The majority of the alarms are Simplex 2901-9838 horns on 2903-9001 light plates, installed in the usual areas (hallways, larger rooms, the cafeteria, gym, auditorium, etc.) In one of the larger multi-purpose rooms, there is a stand-alone Simplex 2901-9838 horn. The teacher’s lounge and the science labs have remote 2904 lights. Outside there is a Simplex 2901-9838 horn near the front entrance.
Pull stations are Simplex break-glass 4251-30s, and the smoke detectors are Simplex 2098-9636 “wiffle-ball” photoelectric heads on 2098-9637 two-wire (flat) bases. The restrooms, locker rooms, science labs and the janitor closet have Simplex heat detectors (rebranded Chemtronics 601s.) Simplex duct detectors were also installed, and 2098-9806 test stations can be found in a variety of areas.
The school was also built with a Simplex 2350 master time system, with 6-inch white/beige Simplex bells installed. Most of them are surface-mounted on trim plates, and there is generally one or two in each hallway, along with one in the cafeteria, one in the auditorium and one in each locker room. Several other rooms instead have buzzers in the clocks, and these buzzers are also in the gym behind the clocks for some reason instead of separate bells.

For the most part, the system stayed the way it is to this day, although in 1996, one of the -9838s stopped working and was replaced with a 4901-9817 horn.
In 1999, a 4251-30 was found to be inoperable, so it was replaced with a Simplex 2099-9756 dual-action pull. Yet another 4251-30 stopped working in 2001, but this time was replaced with an Edwards 270-SPO.
In 2005, the elevator-recall smoke detectors were replaced with newer 4098-9601 TrueAlarms.
Two more 4251-30s broke down in 2008, and were replaced with break-glass 2099-9103 pulls.
Over the years, some of the 4251-30s had the glass frames and hammers removed, thus being converted to single-action.

The Hart Marks K-8 School was built in 1974, and the original fire alarm panel was a 24-VDC Simplex 4208 located in an electrical/mechanical room. A matching annunciator was installed in the main entrance.
The alarms were all Simplex 4051 horns on 4050-80 light plates (with no “FIRE” lettering.) The initial system coding was that the horns were on Continuous while the lights would flash in Slow March Time. The alarms were installed in most of the usual areas, but some classrooms had alarms installed in them, the old multi-purpose room had one, and even in the boiler room!
Pull stations were, again, break-glass 4251-30s. They were installed in the usual areas, but there were also a few classrooms with them, along with in the multi-purpose room, the media center and the wood and metal shop rooms. In the main gymnasium, they had wire metal covers over them. There were two Simplex 4262 ionization smoke detectors in the building; one in the cafetorium and one in the media center. Other areas had 4255-1 mechanical heat detectors.
The school also had an old Simplex master time system installed with Simplex 6-inch beige 4090-series bells installed as the school bells and for non-fire emergencies. One was installed next to each alarm for the most part, and most of them were flush-mounted, except for one in a maintenance hallway. The main gymnasium had two 10-inch flush-mount bells installed. There were a few of these same bells installed outside, also flush-mounted.

In the early 1980s, the 4050-80 in the small gymnasium was damaged, and replaced with an SAE AV32 light plate on the 4051 horn. Then a protective cover was installed over that and the alarms in the main gym.

In 1984, the school had electrical work done, and so new duct detectors got installed. To support them, a small Simplex 2001 panel was installed and tied into the 4208. This panel also now provided system coding, and sounded the alarms on Slow March Time (if Simplex made a 2001 card capable of such a code; if not, then it was 90bpm March Time.) The existing Simplex annunciator in the main lobby was replaced with a larger Simplex-branded graphic annunciator showing the locations of each duct detector. A 4051 horn in one of the halls was found inoperable, and was replaced with a Simplex 2901-9833 horn.

In 1993, the old Simplex master time panel was replaced with a Simplex 6100 time system.

In 1996-2001, a few of the 4251-30s that stopped working were replaced with Edwards/AIP 270-SPO pulls.

In 1998, the boiler room was redone. The 4051+4050-80 in there was replaced with a Simplex 4903-9236 horn/strobe, and a 2099-9756 dual-action pull station was also installed. The 2001 was replaced with a 4004, and all the old duct detectors were replaced with newer Simplex 2098-series duct detectors (in the gray housings), and 2098-9806 test stations were also installed, each one linked to a detector. The old Simplex detector in the media center was also replaced with a Simplex 2098-9201 smoke detector head on a 2098-9211 base.
But in 2001, the 4004 shorted out and was replaced with a Simplex 4010 with ZAMs installed. It was now the main system panel, with the 4208 still being used for the pull stations and older detectors. The panel was programmed to sound the alarms on Slow March Time.

In 2004, the 4051 horn in the wood shop room stopped working, so a Wheelock NS horn/strobe was slapped onto the 4050-80. A few of the heat sensors in classroom wings were replaced with TrueAlarm smoke detectors.

In 2008, another 4051+4050-80 in the hall outside the cafetorium to the maintenance wing was replaced with a TrueAlert horn/strobe. A malfunctioning 4251-30 in the cafeteria was replaced with a Simplex 2099-9103 break-glass pull station.

While Burt Itchupt’s system I mostly made up, the Hart Marks school I mainly based off the school I went to for kindergarten, mostly due to it also being a K-8 school (except MY school didn’t have any shops or a TV studio like the Hart Marks school did!)

Here: I have an idea for this system:

This school was built in 1979, and had a Silent Knight panel ( model number unknown ), with Wheelock 7001’s in the main hallways, 34-24 horns in the classrooms, Simplex 4040’s on 4050-80 light plates in the gym and lunchroom, Fire Lite BG 6’s for pull stations, and some kind of remote annunciator.

What happened:

First some kids who thought they were cool thought it was fun to try and see who can break the 4050-80 in the cafeteria in 1981. The horn is salvaged, and the light plate gets replaced by another 4050-80. Then, some kid decides to pull a BG-6, but the pull down part pulls off, and activates the alarms. The BG-6 is replaced with a 4251-30. Next, in 1985, a 34-24 dies.

TO BE CONTINUED…

In 1986, a fire in the gym destroys the horn and the light plate, so they get replaced with a Simplex 2901-9833 on a 2903. Then, in 2009, the panel dies, so the whole system gets replaced with Spectoralert Advanced’s and BG-12LX’s.
The end.

It’s a fire alarm HORROR STORY!!

The alarm system was assimilated into the “screamers.”

It’s just like with my old school but with them removing Sinplex 4040’s and putting in EST Genesis’s.

What happened to the broken 34-24? Also was it on a light plate or did it come with a strobe? Finally, what rooms were they in? Surely not EVERY single classroom?

In Uranium High School, the system consists of:

EVERYWHERE, Two Spectralert Advance P2R’S right next to each other both set to 180 candella on HIGH VOLUME!!!

Smokes: Silent Knight heat detectors

Pulls: FCI-MS2’S

Panel: Simplex 4020

It got replaced with a 34T-24 and they were in every classroom. At least I believe they were. They were just horns with no plates.

Meh. Why not?

George Washington Elementary School

There is a old section of the school and a new remodeled section of the school. The old section has Simplex 4051s. The new section which was added on later has Simplex 9806 horns. The 4051s are on 4050-80 light plates which blink, the 9806s are behind 2903 strobe plates. The gym, auditorium and cafeteria all have Edwards 892-2B horns. Some bigger classrooms on the first floor also had Wheelock 34 horns on SAE AV32 light plates that blink. Finally, a modular building which was added to the school has Gentex SHG horns.

A local supermarket has a Siemens TXL panel with Siemens U-MMT-MCSs, and Siemens U-MCSs in the bathrooms and break room. There are Siemens FP-11 smoke detectors, a Siemens RCC-2 Annunciator, and Siemens MS-501 pulls.

One day in 2008, a couple of the U-MMTs had very crackly horns and very dim strobes. They planned to get some more U-MMTs off of the Siemens website, but when they checked, their own products were replaced with the Wheelock products, so they ordered some Siemens RSS remote strobes so the alarms sounded the same.

What’s funny is that a local supermarket near me has that exact same system.

Well, except for the panel. But that’s still weird!

A high school was built in 1971 and originally had Simplex 4051 horns on 4050-80 light plates.

However, between 1977 and 1983, several 4051 horns broke down and were then replaced with Space Age Electronics 2DCD horns on AV32 light plates.

By 1985, all of the 4051s were replaced with 2DCD horns.

Between 1987 and 1989, several 2DCDs also broke down and were then replaced with Simplex 2901-9838 horns on 4903-9101 strobe plates.

In 1991, all of the 2DCDs were replaced with 4903-9101+2901-9838s.

In 1992 when a new addition was added, the auto career garage was moved and its old space was turned into classrooms with that wing receiving 4903-9101+2901-9838s

The modular building that was also added in 1992 had 3 Edwards 892-2B horns.

In 1994, the 1992 classroom hallway was renovated and the horns were replaced with Simplex 4903-9219s.

In 1997, the Aquaculture Building received an outdoor Wheelock ASWP on the exterior and in the interior, the 2DCD horn was replaced with a 9219.

In 2000, the 2DCD horn in the lecture hall was replaced with a classic SpectrAlert Classic.

In 2001, the 9838 in the machine shop hallway broke down and was replaced with a Simplex 4903-9219. Only 2 2DCDs were left.

In 2012, the remaining 2DCDs were replaced with Wheelock Exceeders.

That is what is there now, and the system wasn’t made up, its what my High School has. :stuck_out_tongue:
