Pretty weird to have BG-10s along with Simplex Alarms due to the fact there are no buildings (in real life) that have Simplex alarms with non-Simplex Pulls.

My Junior High School has Simplex 4050s on the 2nd and 3rd Floor and 4051s in the Technical Drawing Room and First Floor and they had Edwards 270-SPO pulls. Also, my high school, despite having a Simplex Panel (I think its a 4001), has Edwards 270-SPO pulls in the modular building (but that might be because they have Edwards 982 horns there).

My Junior High School has Simplex 4050s on the 2nd and 3rd Floor and 4051s in the Technical Drawing Room and First Floor and they had Edwards 270-SPO pulls.

And I figured that is because of two possibilities…

1. That school used to have an Edwards system with the 270-SPO pulls, but in the 1970s or early 1980s they upgraded the fire alarms with a then-newer Simplex system, but didn’t replace the pulls.

2. It could be a REALLY old Simplex system from the very early 1970s. My high school, built in 1970, had a Simplex system (now with a new FCI/Gamewell panel) that had 4040 horns, but used 270-SPO pulls. I know Simplex also sometimes used Edwards heat detectors in their systems, too.

Going back on topic, here’s another middle school.

1. When the school was originally built, the alarms were Edwards 870 AdaptaHorns and Edwards 270-SPO non-ADA compliant local alarm pulls all on a Simplex 4208 system.

2. But in the mid 1980’s, all the AdaptaHorns got replaced with Simplex flush mount 4050’s except for all of the alarms in some hallways that got replaced by Edwards 874 horns.

3. Several years later, they took down the 874’s and they put it on Edwards chevron strobe plates (which is similar to the strobe on the 892 series) and they replaced all Edwards 270 pulls with 4251-20 pulls.

4. But in the late 80’s they replaced the 874’s horn with a Space Age Electronics 2DCD’s on the Edwards chevron strobe plate’s.

5. In the mid 90’s, they replaced all the 4050s with 4903-9237’s (4903-9238’s in the gym) and added 4903-9219’s in the classrooms and bathrooms and the panel was replaced by a 4005.

6. In 1998, they replaced the -9238’s and the 4903-9253’s (same as a 9252 but 110cd) and the 9237’s in the locker rooms with 4903-9252.

7. Then in 2000, they put a Wheelock MT-24-WM in the band room.

8. Then in 2003, the 9253’s were replaced with TrueAlerts (which non-SmartSync, and 110 cd.

9. Then in 2004, they added a hallway extension which has System Sensor SpectrAlerts in Continuous along with Simplex Generic T-Bars (2099-9138).

10. Finally in 2007, they added a new wing which have System Sensor SpectrAlert Advances in continuous along with Wheelock generic T-bar pulls.

Another High School is set up like this.

1. The Entranceway has System Sensor MA/SS’s (pre-ADA, 800Hz) with Fire-Lite BG-10L’s on a Silent Knight SK-5208.

2. The bathrooms in that area have Gentex GXS strobes which were added in '96 when codes changed.

3. The A wing has Gentex GMS’s.

4. The B wing has Gentex SHG’s.

5. The C wing has Edwards 892-2B’s.

6. The D wing has 4903-9220’s.

7. The E wing has 4903-9252’s.

8. The F wing has Edwards Integrities set to Code-3.

9. The G wing has Classic SpectrAlerts in Code-3.

10. The H wing has Wheelock MT’s set to Code-3 Tone.

An apartment building has the following:

1. Silent Knight SK-5208 System.

2. Notifier NBG-10L’s.

3. Wheelock MT’s set to siren and the panel is coded to code-3.

Uh, I don’t think Simplex was marketing the 4208 panel anymore in the mid-1980s. I believe they stopped making them in the very early 1980s, when the 42-series panels got replaced with the 2001 series. I believe they continued marketing Simplex 4050s in the mid-1980s, since there was a clip online by SimplexTech of a school with 4050s on 2903 light plates

Sorry, I don’t know a lot about fire alarm system timelines. Update: the school was originally built whenever 4208’s were around and they installed a 4208 panel when the school was built.

Swimming Pool Room Alarms: Simplex 4903-9150H (15 cd Rectangular Speaker/Strobes used for high humidity areas) are in the pool areas (all the alarm devices including the detectors and pull stations are high humidity products.

Remote Strobes: All kinds of TrueAlert strobes are in the house. 4904-9351 (75 cd wall mount strobes) are in offices where there are wall mount alarms. 4904-9357 (75 cd ceiling mount strobes) are in the ceiling mount alarm offices and elevator. 4904-9360 (white 75 cd ceiling mount strobes) are in all the bathrooms. Rectangular strobes 4904-9174 (30 cd) are in the closets.

Ceiling Alarms: Simplex 4903-9363 (TrueAlert Ceiling MountSpeaker/Strobes) are in the parking garage and fancy restaurant in the house.

Wheelock E70: We have these in the spa. We have RSS strobes in the small rooms around the spa.

Speaker only alarms: 4902-9716 (Speaker Only Wall Mount) We have a few of these in the stairwell. 4902-9721 (Speaker Only Ceiling Mount) We have some of these in the garage.

There’s the system. It’s very complex so I may have left out something by mistake.

This is a high school that had to go through a lot of changes.

When it was originally built:

1. Simplex 2001 System (24VDC) (90 BPM March Time).

2. Simplex 4251-30 Break glass T-bars.

3. Simplex 2903+2901-9806’s.

Then in the late 80’s they replaced the 2001 with a 4002.

But then in the mid-2000’s, they made HUGE changes.

1. The 4002 was replaced by a 4100U.

2. The 4251s were replaced by 4099-9002 break glass T-bars.

3. An annunciator was added.

4. The 2903+2901-9806’s were replaced with red TrueAlert Speaker/Strobes.

Here’s the message

I’ll mention two schools.

A school in California has Edwards 892 horn/strobes in big classrooms and in several halls and Edwards 892 speaker/strobes in smaller classrooms and in some hallways, and Edwards 270-SPO pulls.

Another school in PA (about 5 mi near Hersheypark) has:

1. Edwards 892-1B Horn/Strobes (main alarm) in halls and bigger classrooms

2. ESL Lift and Pull T-Bars

3. System Sensor MASS’s in small classrooms set to 1200Hz Interrupted

4. Simplex 9219s in the Gymnasium (along with Simplex 2099-9754 pulls), Health Rooms, Locker Rooms, and some Science classrooms.

5. A “Classic” SpectrAlert in one exit area and a weatherproof Spectra right outside the area.

6. An Edwards 270-SPO and Edwards Integrity set to Code-3 in the Janitor’s room.

7. A Wheelock MT (set to Hi-Lo) on the Bottom of all the stairwells.

Wait a sec. Those were BRK-MA/SS (Pre-ADA) set to 2400Hz steady in the classrooms.

Here are two high schools built near the late 70’s to the early 80’s era that had to go through some changes.

High School #1 (Hilton McCarthy High School)

When the school was originally built

Main Components

3. Simplex 2901-9806’s by themselves and some of them hooked up to 2903-9001 light plates along with the vandal resistant grilles installed.

The Renovation (2002)

New Components

2. The 4251’s were replaced by 4099-9003 dual action T-bars with Stopper IIs over them except for the gym, office, auditorium, and the cafeteria.

3. The 2901-9806’s were replaced with SmartSync TrueAlert’s.

4. The 2903’s were replaced with a trim plate due to having a big hole in the walls.

5. SmartSync TrueAlert Strobes were added in the bathrooms.

6. An annunciator was added.

When silence is pressed, the TrueAlert’s pulse 4 times then silence.

High School #2 (George Henry High School)

When the school was originally built

It looks like it has a silver sounder plate inside. Now that I mention it, I recall seeing a fire alarm system at the place where they held the temporary public library when they were expanding/renovating the old one. That building had what appears to be an old Simplex system, judging by the annunciator. It’s like the one at my high school, complete with Federal Signal flush-mount FG grilles. But the horns in them weren’t 4040s like my high school; they had silver sounder plates in them! I guess those were Simplex 4041s. The pulls were Edwards 270-SPOs.

Come to think of it, I wonder if Simplex ever rebranded the Federal Vibratone 350 with the newer grille? (they did so with the newer 450/2901-9806)
