Remote Strobes
Red wall mount SpectrAlert strobes in the bathrooms, stairwells, and all mobile areas.
An elementary school from 1974 had a Simplex 4208 panel, and the signals were rust-colored Simplex 4051 horns on 4050-80 light plates with “FIRE” on the lens, and there were a few 4051 horn-only units as well. Pull stations were Simplex 4251-11 Chevrons, and a few of them were mounted high up (others were at ADA-compliant levels). The smoke detectors were Edwards heat detectors. Over time, a few of the Chevrons were replaced with 4251-20 T-bar pulls.
In 2004, the system got a total replacement, with a Simplex 4005 panel, a 4603-9101 LCD annunciator installed over the old Simplex annunciator, Wheelock AS horn/strobes replacing the 4051s/4050-80s, and most of the pull stations were replaced with Simplex 2099-9754 T-bars. The Chevrons mounted high-up were replaced with -9754s mounted on Faraday ADA adapters (since Simplex doesn’t make them). The Edwards heat detectors were replaced with Simplex TrueAlarm smokes, model number 4098-9601. Wheelock RSS strobes were installed in the bathrooms.

An antiquated school. Outdoor hallways with overhangs.
The main quad area in front of the school has dual Simplex 2901-9806 horns on weatherproof boxes. The office is right beside that, and it has a Simplex 2001 panel circa 1984. Signal coding is continuous. Right next to it is an older Radionics control panel from 1981. Signal coding is also continuous.
Behind that, wings of older classrooms can be found. Each hallway has a mix of MA sounders set to 800 continuous and 9806s. Both have red projectors over them. In each classroom, there are ESL 445CT smokes on the ceiling. The pulls are Fire-Lite BG-8s.
In the newer wings, Simplex 2098-9201 smokes can be found. There are also 2901-9806s in the classrooms. Pulls are 4251-30s (break glass with hammer type).
The gym has four ESL 1025C smokes, two BG-8 pull stations, and two MA sounders set to 800Hz.
The cafeteria is expanded from the old one. The old one has ESL 445CT smokes every 30 feet along the ceiling, and the new one has those 2098 smokes. Both of which have a Simplex 4051 behind a red flush grille.
In 2001, the system went through a re-do, and the smokes were all torn out. Replacing them are 449CTs, and ESL T-bars. The NAs are Wheelock AS’s set to unsynced code 3. The two 9806s at the front of the school were kept. AHWPs are now in the hallways.

The Lucky Junior High School in Connecticut (this is where Ginger Foutley goes to school.)
Built in 1975, the panel was a Simplex 4208 set on Slow March Time.
The signals were Simplex 4050 horns on 4050-80 light plates with “FIRE” on the lens.
The pull stations were Simplex 4251-30 break-glass.
The ceiling devices were white Edwards heat detectors.
There was a 4208-style annunciator near the main entrance (pre-1979 model with red-and-black trim).
In 1999, some of the old Edwards heat detectors began going bad, so they were replaced with Simplex 2098-9201 smokes 2098-9211 bases.
In 2003, a system upgrade occurred. The 4208 was replaced with a Simplex 4005, set on Code-3.
The 4050/4050-80s were replaced with Simplex 4903-9425 TrueAlert horn/strobes, installed on metal trim plates to cover up the holes from the size of the 4050-80 plates.
The 4251-30s were mainly left intact, but a few of them broke down and were replaced with 2099-9756 dual-action pulls.
Most of the remaining Edwards heat detectors were replaced with Simplex 4098-9601 TrueAlarm smokes on 4098-9788 bases.
The annunciator was left intact.
Remote TrueAlert strobes were installed in bathrooms and in large rooms that originally did not have alarms in them.
The elementary school next door to Lucky Jr. High (where Ginger’s brother Carl goes), built in 1994, has the following alarms…

Remote 4904 strobes were installed in restrooms and other places that required strobe coverage.

The Story
One day, one of the Hex-Lock BG-10’s had it’s hex “terminal” (IDK what you call it) drop loose, making the BG-10 35% loose causing the alarms going off. When the alarms went off, the students and teachers didn’t know what happened. Then the principal said “One of the pull stations broke loose”. Then the fire department came to check for fires, but they found out about the pull station accident. One day later, they had to open the slightly defective BG-10, and before they did, the principal told everyone in the building to disregard the fire alarms. They opened it, alarms went off, the people at the panel were ready to silence the alarms, then the alarms stopped ringing. Then they did something very odd to it. They put lots of duct tape over the contact, which worked very well. And on the layers of duct tape shows the following written in blue pen:
DO NOT REMOVE ALL OF THIS DUCT TAPE!! REMOVING ALL THIS DUCT TAPE WILL SET OFF THE FIRE ALARMS!!
Three school days later, they contacted Fire-Lite for a replacement pull. The next day (they had a planned fire drill that day), Fire-Lite came and replaced the “slightly defective” BG-10 (and the duct tape) with a brand new Fire-Lite BG-12 pull station. Why would they open the pull station and put duct tape over the contact?!
The John Smith high school was built in the late 1920’s. Old Faraday bells and Gamewell pulls were installed. In 1958, a new school district formed. It became the Bob Jones Junior High school. In 1968, some of the bells began to malfunction after a power surge, and were replaced with Edwards Vibratone horns.
In 1976, the school was remodeled and received a new addition. The Faraday system was removed, and a new Simplex 4208 system with 4050 horns and T-bar pulls was installed. Three non-operational Faraday bells still remain in the basement of the school, as well as a few Gamewell pulls that remain functional. In 1981, lighting struck part of the school. Damaged 4050’s were replaced with 2903+4050’s, and some T-bars were replaced with 4251-30s break-glass T-bars. In 1988, an outdoor horn got smashed by a football. It was soon replaced with a Simplex 6" vibrating bell.
In 1989, the school closed. Vandals broke some of the 4050’s and smashed the main panel. The school reopened in 1993, becoming a middle school. It received another addition and some minor remodeling. A new Simplex 4005 panel was put in, along with 4903 horn/strobes. Five 4051’s and two 4050’s still remain. The 6" bell was replaced with a Wheelock MT-24-LSM set to Code 3.
In 2001, a section of the school was torn down, and the school received a major new addition, bringing a new gym, cafeteria, and classrooms. Two of the old Faraday bells were removed, and 3 of the 4051’s were nixed as well. TrueAlerts and T-bars were installed, and tied in with the 4005. Due to complaints of kids not hearing the alarm, Wheelock MIZ horns were installed in all of the classrooms. In 2003, some idiots broke two TrueAlerts in a hallway. Vandal-protective grills were installed in front of the TrueAlerts, and Stopper covers were installed over most of the T-bars. In 2006, three Wheelock RSS strobes and another MT-24-LSM were added outside.
