Some Fire Alarm Pics (56k warning)

Got some more pics.

-Here is the first pic, taken in my tech classroom, this Edwards 10" bell is in one of the offices connected to my tech room.

-At my old ES, one of the outdoor recess bells, this 6" Adaptabel pictured above, got replaced this year with this:

-An Edwards 4" bell. The next set is from a local elementary school.

-In the newer wing, the bells are 4" adaptabels, and the FAs are Mircom-Select-A-Horn/strobes. Most schools in my city are getting their single stroke FA systems with these ones.

-A closeup of the 4" Adaptabel.

-A closeup of a Select-A-Horn/strobes

-In the older wing of the school, there are the older 6" adaptabels pictured here with one of the horn strobes.

-A Mircom MS-201.

-A security siren, and the bell and horn strobe pictured above. And if you can see down the hallway right on that wall is this:

-A brand new 6" adaptabel installed in this new part of the school. It is mounted pretty low though. When I stand beside the bell, the bell is right beside my head.

-And down this hallway, one lone Select-A-Horn/strobe.

-Another security siren.

-A Mircom annunciator panel.

-And an Edwards 270-SPO.

The next pics were taken at a community centre in my city. A couple of years ago, all the community centres in my city got a facelift, which included the FA systems in them as well. This building used to have an Edwards system with 10" single stroke adaptabels.

-Now the alarms are Edwards Genisis.

-An Edwards 270-SPO behind a stopper cover.

-A Heat detector.

-Yet another heat detector.

The last set is from my uncles work. I couldn’t get a picture of the FA panel, but it was a Simplex 4002.

-A simplex T-bar.

-The Canadian version of the -9838.

-A Mircom select-a-horn.

-An emergency pull station.

Got some more pics. The first set is from a high school in my city, which still uses their bell system, most of the high schools use a tone on the PA.

-Here are some pics of the way they installed the bells and FAs. I believe this school had an old single stroke bell system before it got replaced with Edwards Integriety Horn/Strobes. Every bell in the school has an FA beside it. The last pic was taken in the gym, and the bell has a protective cover installed over it.

-One of the labels on the bells.

-The pulls, Newer Edwards 270-SPOs, which gets me to believe maybe the system before wasn’t an edwards system or they would’ve kept the old pulls. It also looks like they installed the pulls lower than where they were originally installed.

-One of the Edwards smoke detectors.

-These 3 pics were taken at an elementary school my school board built 2 years ago in a town near us, to replace 2 other schools they built in the city and put them into one school. Before, one was a primary school (JK-4), and another a middle school (5-8), which I don’t see alot of schools like that in Canada. An elementary school in Canada is considered from JK-8, and then there’s high school, no middle school. I only know of two other schools in our school board that do that, and they are in another small community as well. They will most likley do the same thing like they did to these schools. Anyhoo, before i go off topic here, This school has an EST Quickstart panel (couldn’t get a pic). The alarms are EST Genisis horn/strobes, and the pulls are EST 270-SPOs. A majority of the schools in my school board have had their systems replaced with Mircom FX-2000S and Mircom Select-A-Horn/Strobes between 2005-2007, including my old ES, as part of some school renovation thing.

-Last, 2 random pics, One is a Mircom 10" bell beside an Edwards 6" adaptabel, and the next is showing at a school I went to, how close they installed two Wheelock MT horns.

More pics, this set is from an elementary school.

-The first picture, a Mircom 10" bell and what i think is a simplex 4050. This system looks like it may have gotten renovated, and im guessing the old horns are part of the bell system or they are just the remainder of the old FA system, the pulls are Simplex T-Bars.

-A security siren, which I am guessing on that one.

-A Mircom lamp annunciator in the front, the panel must be in a janitor’s room or something like that.

-A Simplex T-Bar behind a stopper cover, which the stopper is useless there because their main office is right there and you can see the pull from inside the office.

-Another Simplex T-Bar behind a stopper cover, located in their music room/stage for the gym.

-In the last 3 pictures, the same setup in the music/stage for the gym room. I dont know if the old Simplex horns are even used still, but it would be pretty loud to use as a bell.

More pics, I have alot, so i’ll start with these ones. Both the sets were taken at different elementary schools.

Set 1:

-Edwards 10" Bell.

-Edwards 270-SPO

-A 6" bell, I couldn’t read the label.

Set 2:

  • 2 Mircom Trouble piezos, one with a remote annunciator.

-Old Edwards 6" bell

-Security Siren

-An Newer Edwards 6" Adaptabel besides a Mircom Select-A-Horn/Strobe

-Edwards 270-SPO.

-Edwards 270-SPO with Mircom Select-A-Horn/Strobe

Next set of pics, were taken in Toronto, at 3 schools, where i went for my sisters bball games. The schools are all owned by the same school board, so the systems are all Edwards systems.

SET 1

-Edwards 270-SPO under stopper cover, with FA instructions

-Edwards Genisis speaker/strobe.

-EST smoke detector.

-Some sort of security siren.

SET 2

-Instead of Genisis speakers, this school had Genisis Horns and Horn/Strobes.

-EST Smoke Detector.

-Edwards Genisis Horn/Strobe.

-Edwards 270-SPO under a stopper cover, and above it, FA instructions.

-Either an Edwards Genisis horn/strobe or strobe )betting on strobe as this was in the washroom).

-An EST annunciator.

-And the thing that controls the whole system, the FA panel itself. I found it in the schools “delievery recieving” room. I’m betting an EST 3.

SET 3

-Edwards Genisis Speaker only.

-EST smoke detector and sprinkler.

-Edwards Genisis speaker/strobe.

-Fire extinguisher.

-An Edwards 270-SPO under a Genisis speaker/strobe.

*As a side note, for the first school, all the alarms were speaker/strobes, but for the 2nd and 3rd schools, they were mixed, for the second school being horn/strobes and horns, and the 3rd one being speaker/strobes and speakers.

FYI a school board does not own a school. Toronto is a city therefor the city it self “owns” the building. A school board simply sees the buildings operations a “board” can not own something. Also, the type of system has NOTHING to do with the school board. It’s factors depend on bids, features as required by the municipality and state.

Nice to know they let people with cameras just wonder around a school building though… I’ll be sure to email them these, such a nice and secure facility they have there.

Wow, thought I’d never see a school with voice-evac in one of your picture sets (most of the Canadian schools you showed me just had bells or horns.) The first school in the picture set reminds me of the two new elementary schools they built in my city back in 2008, except they all have “FIRE” on the side of the speaker/strobes, and they have the SIGA-278 dual-action pull stations instead of the 270-SPOs (the ones in those pictures might actually be SIGA-270s, since the systems appear to be addressable).

Well, its been awhile, but I have some more pics. I lost a whole bunch of pics from my computer crashing. So here are the remaining pics:

-Here is the first school, which is located in Sarnia. The fire alarms are Mircom Select-A-Horns, replacing some older alarms. The bell system has Edwards 6" adaptabels.

-Here is the pull stations, Edwards 270-SPOs. The first pic is of a pull by itself, The second is a pic of a bell, horn, and the pull under it.

-From a school in Hamilton, here is a Simplex T-Bar under a Simplex -9838.

-Here is the Edwards 6500 in the grocery store near my house. The panel is either disconnected or off, as you can see no light is on, not even the power light. I hope that the panel is being replaced, the system has been like this for 8 months now, and a panel like this would be great in my collection, If I could get my hands on it.

-Here is 2 new pulls I got, 2 Edwards 270-GAOs. These are 2 stage pull stations. On the back there is labelling for the PS part and the GA part. I have tested the PS part, but cannot test the GA part because I don’t own a key for it.

-Here is from my school, in the stage stairs. This Edwards 10" bell has appeared to have fallen out of its place. It still hasn’t been fixed today.

-Now, onto another high school in my city. Here are the alarms and bells, Edwards Genesis horn/strobes, and Edwards 6" adaptabels.

-The pulls, Edwards 270-SPOs.

-The annunciator panel, which is an EST, making me assume the panel is an EST 2 or 3.

-The last school and pics, from another high school in my city, here are the alarms of the system; Simplex -9838s.

-Here’s a Simplex -9838… in the boys washroom. I wouldn’t want to be in there when that thing goes off!

-The annunciator, a Simplex 4806… i think.

-And finally, the pulls, which are Simplex T-bars.

Sorry for the small pics; these pics were taken from my phone.

I’ve never seen a 6500 with the power indicator on. I believe that these indicators burn out because the 6500 didn’t use L.E.D.s but small incandescent bulbs. After 25 years or so of constant operation, it’s not a big surprise that these incandescent power lamps go out.

Some more pics.

-These were taken at a store, the fire bells were mounted way up on the ceiling beams. There is one that was mounted on a vent. The bells are Edwards 4" adaptabels.

-These were taken at a mall downtown in the parking building. The first is a Simplex T-bar, which is outside on the top floor of the parking lot, it is covered in a box. The second is some Simplex smoke, and the third is a Simplex lifealarm speaker, and the last a Wheelock EH speaker.

The next set was taken at my grandpas apartment. The FA system got the signals upgraded, before they were these:

Now these:

The pulls all remained the same:

-And ironically, they also kept the panel, the 6500, which is still up and running.

Been a while, but got alot new photos! I’m not going to post them all at once, but in smaller groups. The first group is some candid shots of Fire alarms from my trip to Boston.

-This is from the museum of science, can’t make out the bell and strobe, but the pull is a Gamewell “full moon”.

-Also from the museum, is an Edwards 10" Adaptabel gong, in a huge Rube Goldberg machine.

-From an old church just outside of Boston, what i believe to be a Simplex smoke.

-One of the pulls, a Gamewell “full moon” station, which was mounted up really high.

-Not FA related, but one of the old exit signs.

-Here you see an Edwards 270-SPO without the break glass part of it, a silver bell, and a mini-horn.

-Also not FA related, but an old speaker.

-I have no idea where I took this, but a Siemens branded MT, with french and english lettering.

-The panel from that place, a Siemens MXL.

-Next is from a hotel we stayed at, and this is one of the sprinklers.

-A smoke detector and Edwards heat.

-A Mirtone 6" bell and a Mirtone pull underneath.

-An Edwards “doorknob” smoke.

-A Mirtone pull.

-A change, A Wheelock 6" bell, and an Edwards 270-SPO.

-An Edwards 4" Adaptabel, and a Mirtone Pull.

-A Notifier 6" bell.

-Taken from my workplace, in the staff room, is a Mirtone 6" bell, usually covered by boxes of croutons.

-From my school, A closeup of one of the IBM 4" bells.

-Also from my school, an Edwards 10" Adaptabel that fell off the wall:

-The last for today, a really old pull station, from the school in my neighbourhood with this wierd horn:

The museum of science has a very interesting system. Those Gamewell century (aka. full moon) pulls are indeed found throughout most of the museums. The bells in those bell/strobes are made by Gamewell, but the strobes appear to be Simplex 2904 remote strobes (or lights) slapped onto the bell grilles. It was likely that the bells originally had no visuals, and that Simplex added the visuals on sometime in the 80s when they were servicing the system. I know that one alarm in the museum is a 10-inch bell behind a red grille with NO visual on it, so it is very likely that the 2904s were added later. BTW, where was this alarm picture taken? I don’t quite recognize that part of the museum.

The museum also has quite a lot of Wheelock 6-inch bells on non-ADA strobe plates, along with Wheelock E70s found in newer areas. The newer areas have Notifier BG-12 pulls, and BG-10s can be found in the cafe (along with old-style E70s). The theater of electricity and butterfly garden currently has Wheelock E70s and BG-12s, but used to have Simplex 4251-30 pulls and 10 inch bells behind grilles with remote 4050-80 lights. Many remains of old alarms covered up in that area can be found, and a couple old setups are even still intact! Overall, the museum has quite an interesting system.

BTW, why are some of your old pictures so large (taking up most of the screen)? I’m not trying to criticize you, but it does make the thread quite hard to read and scroll through.

That picture was taken in the basement of the red wing, where the live animal exhibit is. Great info though! I remember seeing the Wheelock bells on the strobe plates, I didn’t get time to take pics of the whole system. I never really noticed the alarms in the theater of electricity though, we had about an hour or so to look around the museum so I was kinda rushed. To answer your last question, that’s because some of the pics messed up when they were resized.

Next set of pictures. The first ones were taken at a high school in my city.

-An Edwards Genisis Horn/strobe or strobe installed in the washroom.

-As you can see, there was another FA system installed there, but you can see the new alarms, where the old one was, and an Edwards 6" adaptabel.

-The pulls, Edwards 270-SPOs covered by stoppers.

The second ones were taken in Hamilton, for my sisters bball tourney. The first school i’ve been to before, but its old Simplex system was replaced with this newer Mircom system:

-This is the annunciator panel in the main lobby. As you can see on the screen, the main panel is a Mircom FX-2000.

-The simplex smokes still remain from the old system.

-The new alarms, Mircom Mini-horns. Don’t know the model # to these though. This one was installed in the washroom.

-Fire safety procedures for the school.

-The new pulls, replacing the Simplex 4251-20s, These Mircom MS-401s under stopper covers.

-Here you can see one of the mini horns next to a spot where the old Simplex horns used to be; they were flush mount Simplex 4040s or 4050s, don’t really know.

-Right behind this TV, where you see a beige cover plate, thats where there used to be a grey Simplex 6" bell, with red cursive on it spelling Simplex.

-Here is a Mini horn next to where the old flush mount horns used to be.

-In the gym, A Mircom Select-A-Horn/Strobe, with a Mircom MS-401 pull.

-Here you can see one of the flush mount horns still intact! I guess they didn’t want to bother going up there and uninstalling the horn plus cover it. I will post the next set, which are the other two schools, tomorrow.
