Wal-Mart and Fire Alarms

I just noticed something while I was at wal-Mart: There was some kind of alarm hanging from a small pole by the main entrance.

Mine has circular spectras that replaced wheelock MTs

The WalMart near me is like that. Except one MT can be found hanging from conduit over the entrance to Layaway, right next to electronics. The MT is non-ADA.

Well, in Iowa, for the third time, I visited a Wal-Mart that just had a t-bar in the customer service area, and no visible alarms anywhere. Doesn’t this have to be against code, I thought places that big had to have alarms with strobes? Anyhow, someone mentioned it, and I have to think that with these places there’s a tone or voice evacuation broadcasted over the PA system. Is this like the new thing to do in stores or Wal-Marts, or were these just a couple of weird flukes, do you all think?

Mine has a 9600.

the walmart in toledo has the basic annunciator with 2 buttons…
the strobes in the ceiling are round, looks like system sensor.
several stores i have been in have notifier systems. possibly installed by the company i worked for last summer as they are a large notifier dealer here in cleveland.
i see a lot of simplex systems too.

ok. just thought of this in conjunction with the discussion of target. could the reason for lack of signals have something to do with the existence of detection devices including smoke detectors and sprinklers?

I don’t know about the newer Wal-Marts, but the older ones are just like my Targets, Radionics (Bosch) 9112 or 9412 FACP and Burg alarm panels. There was an informal meeting a few years ago between some of the alarm guys in my shop at Target and the Wal-Mart techs to compare notes, and the funny part is that their systems were just like ours. Also, at least one of my former co-workers at Target went to Wal-Mart as an alarm tech after Target laid us all off.

My Wal-Mart has ceiling-mount Spectralerts with wall-mount remote strobes in the bathrooms.

Please try not to bump old topics unless you have something very interesting or relevant. Thank you.

I’m kinda breaking my own rule about bumping old topics but this is a bit interesting…

I was in a Wal-Mart tonight and I heard a PA announcement. I didn’t see any PA speakers though… instead I saw Wheelock 8" Speaker/Strobes.

They actually wired the PA System to the VECP to save on installing twice as many speakers, or installing both speakers and horn/strobes.

More places should catch on to that; I bet it saves money on installation of both systems because then you only need to buy speaker/strobes and one amplifier, as opposed to speaker/strobes, speakers and two amplifiers or horn/strobes, speakers and one amplifier.

I just saw that same configuration myself.

An old Bruno’s grocery store in Orange Beach was just remodeled and rebranded as a Wal-Mart “Neighborhood Market” within the past 6 months.

That was the exact alarm, ceiling mounted, and there was one lone sigcom style Bosch branded t-bar.

Yeah, I’ve seen such at a new Walmart in my area. I was in that Walmart and I heard a PA announcement coming out of the speaker/strobes. I think it’s pretty neat.

Worthington MN Walmart has a bosch keypad and a radionics pull station in the customer service and red wheelock as on the poles and a spectralert remote strobe in one of the bathrooms in the other bathrooms there are wheelock rss

My local Wal-Mart (Glen Ellyn, IL) has a Radionics system. The system has re-branded RSG t-bars, Wheelock alarms mounted poorly, and towards the back of the store, SpectrAlert Classics. Here are some pics from this exact system.

Sorry. Didn’t realize this was a super old topic. It bumped to the top for some reason, and I thought it was brand new.

Oh well. Your pictures are interesting anyway.

Not a problem, another user woke the thread up, waited a short while and then they deleted the post they had made. It held the topic in place as a recent post.

Right now im on vacation in arkanses and here near were im staying they have a bosh system with wheelock 70027ts and harriton signal T-bars and at home were i like in IL that wal-mart has a bosh system as well but that walmart has no pull stations and wheelock AS’S. I wonder why bosh is so common in wal-marts?

I vaguely remember a Walmart where I used to live in Virginia have a system like that, except they looked more like Wheelock 7002’s. It caught my attention and I thought it was pretty odd for fire alarms to be hanging like that, which is probably the only reason I remember it.
