Fire Alarms in video games

Those bells are probably adaptabells, due to the big gold stickers on them.

I know in the Airplane Story 3 game on Roblox they use the Simplex 4100U/ES voice evac whoop as the alarm tone.

In 2fort on tf2 there is these alarm bells

And in the remake of half life 1 there is these spectralert classics that play the sounds of a unknown alarm bell that also come in a blue varient that are outside the security offices, presumably to alert security officers in black mesa, then alarms that very closely resemble wheelock RSSP’s with a System Sensor SSM24-6 mounted on them, that i believe are scattered around lambda, and pull stations that resemble simplex 4099s, shown in the 3rd picture

Yeah: most of those have already been noted here though.

Yeah: they very closely resemble the Edwards 439D-6AW (which I actually have one of): you can even see what almost looks like “EDWARDS” written below the “FIRE BELL” lettering! (which is where both bits of text are on the real thing. Unless the raw texture file is found (if it hasn’t been already) we won’t know for certain what Valve wrote there though) Something else to note is that they’re red regardless of what team’s base they appear in (unlike a lot of other things in the game, though fire extinguishers are too). They also appear on other maps besides 2Fort (which ones exactly however I don’t know).

Yeah: Crowbar Collective (the developers) ended up being just like Hollywood when it came to not getting the sound right! (though much like with Hollywood that may just be a small detail that they didn’t think was worth getting right (even if they likely referenced an actual SpectrAlert when it came to making the model itself) Still, it’s impressive that they modeled it after an actual notification appliance instead of some generic bell (though given the size of the Black Mesa Research Facility a voice-capable system with speaker/strobes would likely be much more fitting). I believe the bell sound you hear is just a stock sound effect of a 6-inch bell. Yeah: there’s also a black variant labeled “BMS”: what this variant is for exactly, why it exists, & where it might be found in the game I have no idea however.

Eh, sorta: the bell looks rather generic & the strobe plate resembles a Gentex AVP-series one more.

Funnily enough at least one person in this very topic has said that one version of the game has Simplex t-bar-type stations instead!

BMS i am assuming stands for “Black Mesa Security” and like i said they are placed around security offices

Considering the blue no-lettering texture was seemingly replaced with the black “BMS”-lettering one at some point, that may very well be the case (even if blue is a more police/security color).

found out that the strobes on the spectralert classics do flash, but they flash like a strobe light instead of just one blink

and I also found out that NFPA 72 is non existent in this world or black mesa just doesn’t get inspected

So…that’s realistic then?

Apparently so! (which is surprising given just how much more realistic Black Mesa is compared to Half-Life & how much more sensibly designed the Black Mesa Research Facility is)

the good thing though is most parts of the black mesa facility have sprinklers

and the other thing that is strange about the black mesa facility is there is some alarms that are at eye level, then some alarms all the way up at the ceiling in a giant warehouse room, then some that are at heights that are up to NFPA 72 code, and some that have pull stations under them, there is a huge variety of how the alarms are mounted

That is good, especially considering the BMRF in Half-Life didn’t have any at all!

Guess the devs didn’t pay attention to stuff like that (which I suppose would make sense since practical level design & difficulty balancing should be the main focuses instead. Still, at least they included any sort of life safety equipment at all, since most games don’t).

I just found out, at the part where you mortar that giant flamethrower creature, there is two very detailed models of STH-10s in CD yellow

here is a more up close screenshot of it

Yep, though the design is more like a combination of the 2T22/3T22 & STH-10: it has the overall design of a 2T22/3T22, but it also has the single layer of horns from an STH-10 (albeit with 10 cones/horns instead of 12).

A Gargantua?

yeah i did not know the name of it at all

Very much STH like. But, it’s the bottom half of a 3T22. So we’ll call it the STM-10-C.

Oh yeah: the 2T22/3T22 does have exactly 10 horns on the bottom, so I guess it is more like a one-layer/one-half of a 2T22/3T22 than a hybrid of/cross between a 2T22/3T22 & an STH-10.

Exactly what I was thinking
