Make Up a System (2.0)

Since I already did 1 586 student elementary school, here is another one.
Built in the early 1970s, some of the old alarm system remains with them being Standard 450 horns behind Standard 450 light plates in most areas

The self-contained classroom in the early to mid 80s had the alarm in there replaced with a Wheelock 34T horn behind a Space Age Electronics light plate

Shortly after that, the alarm in the math interventionist’s room was replaced with a Simplex 2901-9833 horn behind a Simplex 2903-9101 light plate

In the OT/PT room, a horn was put in there since the horns outside were too quiet so it got a Siemens U-HNH horn/strobe

When the gymnasium was renovated, all former horns were replaced with National Time and Signal C3 horn/strobes

Wrapping it up, the psychologist’s office has an Edwards Genesis horn/strobe
Gordon Elementary was built in 1923 and renovated in 1992. It was built with a medieval style architecture.

Panel
Simplex 4002, replacing an old IBM panel.

Initiating Devices
Simplex 2099 pulls and older TrueAlarms, plus one System Sensor i3.

Original initiating devices were pulls rods along with IBM break-glass stations.

Notification Appliances
Signals are Simplex 2901-9362 bells on 4903 strobe plates. These bell/strobes are installed in the hallways, cafeteria/MPR, gym, library, art room and music room. Restrooms have Simplex TrueAlert Remote Strobes (installed when the restrooms were renovated). There are two CSX10-24R Bells replacing broken signals, and a Edwards Chime.
NAC 1 powers the bells and is set to 120 bpm march time. NAC 2 powers the strobes and is set to continuous.

The original system had IBM single stroke bells coded to 4-4.

Clocks/Bells/Intercom
The PA System is a Bogen SI35A, and the master clock panel is a Simplex 6400 replacing an older Edwards panel.

Classrooms have Simplex clock/speaker combos with buzzers in the clocks. Hallways, offices, the library, gym, and cafeteria/MPR have wall-mounted Bogen speakers. Clocks in the hallways are a mix of older Edwards and newer Simplex and a few Lathem clocks.

Bells are Edwards 4-inch Adaptabels. These bells are installed in the hallways, art room, and music room. The cafeteria/MPR and gym have 6-inch bells, and outside there are Edwards 10-inch bells, along with a Federal Signal bell replacing a broken model.

ehh… I dunno

Shortwood High School is a 2-story building built in 1978 with an addition in 2015. Another building was added on in 1999. A small staff office building was built in 2003 beside the school.

Control Panel
The panel for the old 1978 building is a Cerberus Pyrotronics MXL in the basement (maintenance/working area that operates the building) with an annunciator at the main entrance. This panel replaced the original Edwards 6500 panel in 1995.

The other building features a Notifier NFS2-640 system in a control room, with the annunciator at the entrance too. It replaced the original Simplex 4100 in 2012.

The office building across the way features it’s original Notifer AFP-200.

Initiating Appliances
Most pull stations in the earlier building are Siemens MSM-Ks installed in 2014, while in some older unrenovated places and the basement they are Cerberus Pyrotronics MS-51s. All of these have Stoppers covering them. There is ONE old Edwards “Local Alarm” 270-SPO in an abandoned hallway blocked off by the Auditorium in 1989 and finally a classroom expansion in 2004, so no one can get into that section without drilling a hole. Smoke detectors are all Siemens PE-11s installed in 2010. Older detectors before 2010 were CP IlP-1s.

Due to being changed from Simplex to Notifier for the other building in 2012, all the original Simplex 2099s/some 4099s are removed and replaced with NBG-12s. The TrueAlarms are still in though, originally 2098s before 2007.

The staff office like the newer building has NBG-12s, but unlike the TrueAlarms in the school they have System Sensor SD355s that replaced 2400s in 2016.

Notification Devices

To start off simple, the staff office has Classic SpectrAlert horn/strobes with strobes in offices and SpectrAlert Advance strobes in bathrooms, as they were renovated in 2014. Before the renovation, there were no alarms because the bathrooms were only single use. A weatherproof Classic horn/strobe can be found on the side of the building.

In the original building, the main alarms are Siemens S-LP70-MCS speaker/strobes, installed pretty much everywhere. However, in the auditorium, gym, and other areas with high ceilings, there are an abundance of Siemens S-LP70s on the ceiling and U-MCSes on the walls. Bathrooms, offices, and some stairwells have U-MCSes. The pool has Siemens S-HPMG-MCS-WP speaker/strobes. A few SEF-MC-R speakers have replaced dead S-series speaker/strobes and two recently renovated restrooms have ZR-MC-CRs. The new addition from 2015 has Siemens SE-MC-CRs pretty much everywhere and bathrooms have ZR-MC-CRs. The basement has disabled Cerberus Pyrotronics HNH-S17-S mechanical horn/strobes with active S-LP70-MCSes above them, and the alarm above the abandoned 270-SPO is a silver Edwards Silver Circular Adaptahorn with “FIRE HORN”.

Before the speakers in 2005, alarms were Cerberus Pyrotronics HNH-S17-Ses and just S17-Ses, and before 1994 they were 10 Edwards Circular Adaptahorns with “FIRE HORN”.

The newer 1999 building currently has Gentex SSPK24CLPR speaker/strobes installed pretty much everywhere, excluding smallish areas and bathrooms, which only have Commander 3 or 4 strobes. Some areas have SSPK24WLPRs too, like the gym, places with high ceilings, or the entrances/exits of the school. Outside are Wheelock RSS strobes left over from the previous system.

The original system featured Simplex 4903-9219 horn/strobes, which were very common in schools around the area. Classrooms either had Wheelock MIZs or Simplex GX-90s, or even 9219s, depending on the size. This was the same with bathrooms, without the 9219s.

I’m not going to really finish this system because I started it before the forums went down, so I really didn’t care, and it ended up turning into a typical one. So no in-depth info on the bells/clock/intercom, though the bell was a triple tone over the loudspeaker.

Mitchell K-8 School was built in 1955 as a K-5 elementary and renovated into a K-8 school in 1995. The original building was a small 2-story building, which included a cafeteria, auditorium, and library. The new addition is a large 2 story expansion, which included science rooms, 3 tech labs, an agriscience lab, new band and choir rooms, a woodshop, and a gymnasium.

Panel
Simplex 4120, replacing an old Edwards panel.

Initiating Devices
Both buildings have Simplex 2099 and 4099 pulls, along with a mix of 2098 and TrueAlarm smoke detectors. Simplex Duct Detectors are installed on the AHUs, and the boiler rooms have ESL Heat Detectors.

The most common alarm in the school is the Amseco BZ-54VT motor horn with the RSD-24 strobe screwed in. These are installed in most hallways, the gym, and the theatre room (connected to the gym). Larger classrooms and the other hallways have EST Integrity horn/strobes, except the older computer lab which has two EST Genesis horn/strobes. Regular classrooms, bathrooms and small-mid spaces have either Integrity or Genesis strobes. One white Wheelock Exceder strobe can be found in a classroom moved from the iPad Lab replacing a broken Integrity Strobe. When the pull rod system was in place, there were a couple Autocall Bells that did 4-4-4-4 installed in the hallways and gym. The one in the gym is still there.

The 1988 addition has Simplex 2901-9833s in 2903 strobe plates installed in the hallways, while classrooms have Simplex 4904-9001s and bathrooms have Simplex 4904-9137s. 4 classrooms that were combined to be a mini iPad lab have two Simplex 59AV-WRF horn/strobes at both side walls, with 59VOs in the smaller rooms. There is only one Simplex 4903-9105 with a 4901-9846 horn/strobe-plate in the middle of the left hallway. Some of the classrooms and bathrooms have Simplex TrueAlert strobes.

The iPad lab has ceiling mounted Wheelock Exceeder horn/strobes and strobes, with most rooms having wall-mounted horn/strobes and strobes. One room has a strobe missing from the back used in a classroom in the main building. Bathrooms have ceiling strobes.

Throughout all three buildings, there are also SpectrAlert Advance Bluepoint police alarms installed throughout the hallways and in classrooms above the doorway. Most classrooms in the original building do not have these, so do some hallways.

Initiating Devices

In the original building, there is only one pull rod in a sub-hallway that was configured to activate the modern fire alarm system. Everything else are mostly Edwards 270-SPOs, with a few old ones located near the pull rod area (very unrenovated area), and in renovated areas there are EST SIGA-270s. Smokes are almost all SIGA-PS’, though a few Edwards EC10U-3s can also be found.

The pulls in the addition are either Simplex 2099 or 4099 single action T-Bars, and all the smoke detectors are TrueAlarm. There are, however 4099s dual action T-bars by the exit doors.

In the iPad Lab, every pull is a Simplex 4099-9003 with a Stopper II lift cover, and every Smoke is a Simplex TrueAlarm.

Other Essentials

The PA system is a Rauland Telecenter U tied into an older Dukane intercom system for the main building and the newer Bogen system for the Lab and extension. The most common speakers are circular or square Rauland speakers found in hallways, bathrooms, and classrooms, although in some areas there are vintage Dukane wooden speakers found in both hallways and classrooms. The iPad lab and the addition both have regular ceiling circular speakers in the hallways and wall square speakers in the classrooms. Every classroom has an emergency call switch.

The Clock system is a massive Primex Smart-Sync system replacing an Edwards system, installed quite recently. Clocks are all Primex Education Series 12.5”s, with dual-sided clocks in the hallways and mounted clocks in the classrooms, gym, kitchen, wherever else duel clocks are unneeded. All the other components (OneVue, etc) are found in the school control room.

The bell is a tone over the PA. Any and all other bells have since been removed, but the original school dinging bell from when the building was built has been placed on a large shelf, and occasionally gets used during school assemblies.
Most common alarm is the Simplex 4051 horn on a 4050-80 flasher

Over in the math interventionist’s office though, a Simplex 4903-9237 was eventually installed because the math interventionist couldn’t hear the alarms from it

Then only the cafeteria received an upgrade and the horns installed were Space Age Electronics VA4 horn/strobes

An electrical wire that was frayed caused a small fire in the 2/3 small group room which had no alarm at first but when they repaired it, they put a Wheelock 34T horn on a Space Age Electronics AV32 flasher in there and also put one in the K/1 small group room

The 4051+4050-80 in the music room died and was replaced with a Federal Signal 450D horn with a VALS strobe though it was mounted on the ceiling in the middle of the room while the horn and light plate were removed since it was wall mount

Finally a tornado hit the school and destroyed only the 4/5 wing so when they rebuilt that section, the alarms used were Simplex 4903-9252 horn/strobes
