Hazelman Senior High School–built 1928, 1964, 1974, 1985, 1994, 1997, 2015

Architectural History of Hazelman Senior High School

Hazelman opened its doors to it’s first 600 students in the fall of 1928, as a four building campus. The Main Building (3 floors) housed 25 classrooms, the Gymnasium, Auditorium, and Administrative Offices. The Music Building (two floors) housed the tiered (mutli-level) band and chorus rehearsal rooms, as well as the theatre arts rehearsal space and all associated storage rooms. The cafeteria was, well, the cafeteria and kitchens. Lastly, the Vocational Building (two floors) hosted 15 vocational/trade classroom spaces. Athletic facilities were located behind the campus and are irrelevant to this post.

The first addition came in 1964, when a new Administrative Offices building was constructed adjacent to the Main Building, as the office wing in Main was converted to classroom space to accommodate the growing student population. This was followed in 1974 by the New Science Building, an open-concept classroom building designed to accommodate 15 science classes, and has five traditional Labratory rooms for the Physics and Chemistry classes to use on a “first come, first occupied” basis. Then, in 1985, a one-story Special Needs Classroom Building was constructed and houses six Special Needs classrooms, as well as all necessary facilites needed. This building was connected to the Main Building via a hallway that opened into the cafeteria hallway. Further expansions came in 1994, with the 20 Classroom New History Building, and again in 1997, with the 1500-Person capacity New Gymnasium. Then, in 2015, a new, $6.5 Million Cafeteria opened with a 700-Person dining capacity and five serving lines.

Fire Protection History of Hazelman Senior High School

When opened, all of the 1928 Buildings had manual pull-rod fire alarm gongs. Electric alarms were first installed in 1964, as outlined below.

Control PanelSimplex 4246-1—5 Zones, One Zone per Building, installed in the New Administration Building

Notification Appliances—Simplex 4030 Horns, a mix of -1 and -2 Models throughout the four 1928 Buildings. The ‘new’ 1964 building has Simplex 4037 flush mount horns. Signal Coding is Continuous.

initiating Devices—Simplex 4251-1 Chevron pulls and Chemtronics Heat Sensors. Trip-switches of unknown manufacturing origin were installed on each existing pull-rod.

1974 saw the addition of the New Science Building.

Control PanelSimplex 4208—8 Zones, Three Zones in New Science, the other five cover the existing zones. The 4246-1 was removed. Installed in the Administration Building.

Notification Appliances—Simplex 4051+4050-80 Horn/Lights. Flush mounted in New Science, and surface mounted in all remaining buildings, replacing the 4030 signals. Signal Coding is Continuous.

Initiating Devices—Simplex 4251-20 Pull Stations and 4255-1 Smoke Sensors in New Science; all existing devices remain intact.

In 1985, the New Special Needs Wing was constructed. Of course, new devices had to be installed.

Control PanelSimplex 2001—12 Zones, Four Zones for the New Special Needs Wing, the remaining eight cover the existing zones. A Space Age Electronics Graphic Annunciator was installed in the vestibule of Main Building. The 4208 was removed.

Notification Appliances—Simplex 2901-9833+2903-9001 Horn/Lights and 2904-9001 Remote Lights–Flush Mounted in New Special Needs. Simplex 2901-9333 Bells are added to all building exteriors across the campus. All existing devices remain intact. Signal Coding is 90 BPM March Time across the campus.

Initiating Devices—Simplex 4251-30 Pull Stations and Simplex 2098 “Wiffle-Ball” Smoke Sensors in New Special Needs; all existing devices remain intact.

In 1994, the New History Building opened its doors. Due to a District-level change in services, a totally different kind of system is installed.

Control PanelCerberus Pyrotronics IXL—One SLC, One ICon-1 I-Series SLC Module for New History, 12 CZI-H2S modules to cover the existing zones, One GAD module to drive the graphic annunciator in Main Building. The Simplex 2001 is removed.

Notificaton Appliances—Cerberus Pyrotronics EHM-D Horn/Strobes and SVMT-F Remote Strobes in New History; all existing devices are now run by Cerberus Pyrotronics PAD-3 Remote NAC Panels. SIgnal Coding is Continuous across the entire campus.

Initiating Devices—Cerberus Pyrotronics MSI-20B Pull Stations and a mixture of ILI-1 and ILP-1 Smoke Sensors in New History connected to the ICon-1 Module. All existing devices remain intact and are monitored by the CZI-H2S Modules.

In 1997, the New Gymnasium opens. The IXL is still the control panle, but there are minor alterations.

Notification Appliances—Cerberus Pyrotronics MC-S75-F Horn/Strobes and S75-F Remote Strobes throughout the New Gymnasium Building, with a Cerberus Pyrotronics TTH high-output horn on the exterior of the building, all controlled by a Cerberus Pyrotronics PAD-3. Signal Coding in this building is Temporal 3, while the remainder of the campus still sounds in Continuous.

Initiating Devices—Cerberus Pyrotronics MSI-10B Pull Stations and ILP-1 Smoke Sensors throughout the New Gymnasium, controlled by another ICon-1 added to the IXL.

Nothing really changed, with the exception of the occasional dead signal being replaced with a Siemens U-MMT-MCS device, until 2015. The New Cafeteria opened in 2015, and this brought MAJOR changes in the name of Simplex.

Control Panel—Simplex 4100ES InfoAlarm. Conventional Zone modules monitor all existing conventional zones, while all addressable devices are replaced. A new Graphic Annunciator is installed in Main Building, and Simplex 4603-9101 Annunciators are installed in ALL buildings. The IXL panel is removed.

Notification Devices—Simplex TrueAlertES 49AV-WWF Horn/Strobes and Simplex TrueAlertES 49VO-WWF Remote Strobes are installed throughout the New Cafeteria Building, along with Simplex TrueAlertES 49WP-APPLW-CO Weatherproof Horn/Strobes on the exterior. All existing signals remain in place, but all the Cerberus Pyrotronics PAD-3 NAC panels are replaced with Simplex 4009 IDNet NAC Extenders. Signal Coding is now Temporal 3 across the entire campus.

Initiating Devices—Simplex 4099-9004 Pull Stations and Simplex 4098-9792 Smoke Sensors are installed throughout the New Cafeteria and replace all Cerberus Pyrotronics I-Series devices. All conventional initiating devices remain intact and are connected to Zone Conversion Modules within the 4100ES.

So far, nothing else has changed, with the exception of a Wheelock HS4-24MCW-FR replacing a defunct 4051+4050-80 in Main Building in 2017.

4 rivers middle school was built in 1967 with an old simplex 4247 system within 10 inch bells and 4251-113 pulls.
