Western Square mall

A fictional mall (one floor) built in 1960 on the western edge of the same city as that high school posted in February. Each [junior] anchor store has their own system. This mall and all anchors have a Grinnell sprinkler system with respective flow switch and water gongs on exterior–which is standard for most malls from this era–also tied into the FA systems. all [junior] anchor tenants have Pyrotronics auxiliary relay cabinets (FIU series panels) for the F3 smoke detectors

Main mall:

Panel–Simplex 4246-4 with master code generator of 4-4 in main electrical room; Pyrotronics auxiliary relay cabinet (FIU series panel) for tenant smoke detectors; respective light up annunciators in management office (with reset switch) and main entrance (light up only);

Initiating devices–Simplex 4251-1 pulls at all entrances and emergency exits; tenants have Pyrotronics F3 detectors in their backrooms; also the main mall’s electrical and mechanical rooms; food court tenants and restaurants have 4255 heat sensors in kitchens and storage rooms.

Signaling devices–Simplex 4040 horns with semi-flush plates and PR-2 projectors mounted on ceiling

Sears (closed 2018)

Panel–Gamewell FlexAlarm

Initiating devices–Gamewell Vita-Guard coded pulls (the ones similar to master boxes); Pyrotronics F3/5 detectors in offices, mechanical, storage, and elevator machine room and shaft; duct variants on all air handlers (in all anchors)

Signaling devices–Gamewell 10 inch single-stroke bells

This system was salvaged and donated to the local fire museum (the display there contains the panel and FIU cabinet, three coded pulls with their original back boxes, two of the F3 smoke detectors plus one duct version, and for the signals–one of the bells and the system trouble bell) by Glenn James (Old School Fire Alarms) shortly before conversion into a Dick’s Sporting Goods (upper floor) and a few antique shops (a few components from the original Sears FA System were sold to various local enthusiasts there; a coded pull with original backbox, two detectors, and a bell) and a mini “streetscape” with various tenants.

Dick’s Sporting Goods:

Panel: Simplex 4007ES

initiating devices: addressable TrueAlarm smokes–also ducted versions–and 4099 “T-bars” with the newer current Simplex logo.

Signals–ceiling-mounted TrueAlert ES horn/strobes in red.

Signals in the “streetscape” are conventional Simplex TrueAlert horn/strobes with newer 2099 pulls.

Penney’s:

Panel–Edwards coded system

Initiating devices–Edwards 1250 coded pulls

Signaling devices–Edwards 6 inch single stroke “Adaptabels”

[Montgomery] Ward’s (closed when they filed for bankruptcy)–later became Dillard’s in 1998, but retained the existing FA system)

Panel–Autocall coded system

Initiating devices–Autocall NYSP coded pulls

Signaling devices–Autocall RF-10 semi-flush single stroke bells

Marshal Field’s (became part of Macy’s in the early 2000s)–

Panel–Faraday coded system

Initiating devices–flush mount versions of the circular coded pull stations (have a rectangular outer door); Chemetron heat sensors in restaurant kitchen.

Signaling devices–Faraday 2005 “UNI-PACT” 10 inch single stroke bells

Junior anchors–mostly five and dime stores amd two supermarkets

Woolworth’s (in the same hallway as Penney’s; closed 1997–now a Foot Locker and a few other stores)

Panel–Notifier “mini-fridge”

Initiating devices–Notifier BG-1’s; (this one has one of the last lunch counters, so it has Chemetron heat sensors at it and in the storage rooms and manager’s office); Notifier NK-24 ionization smoke detectors in mechanical rooms

Signaling devices-- Notifier branded FS&S 350A horns (flush mounted; some with dual projectors)

This system was also salvaged and is on display at the fire museum–similar display as the first system, but with only one of each initiating device and two horns. OSFA has the rest of the components. The F/L And the other stores do not have any systems (except for newer conventional Siemens smoke detectors in backroom areas).

Grant’s (Ward’s hallway; closed 1976–would later be remodeled into a Builders Sqaure, which would retain the original FA system until their bankruptcy in 1999, after they closed, the space was converted into a Barnes & Noble, which would get a Fire-Lite MS-UD series panel with system sensor 2400 smoke detectors, ADA Multi-Alert sounder/strobes (MA/SS) and prototype BG-12s.) The original system is now in the hands of a collector, who plans to donate it to the local fire museum in the future.

Panel–ADEMCO 508

Initiating devices–529 pull station and respective 500 series heat sensors

Signaling devices–ADEMCO vibrating 10 inch bells

Newberry’s: (Sears Hallway–briefly renamed to Dollar Zone in the early 2000s–closed 2002–became H&M the following year; new system consists of an EST QuickStart (QS series) with SIGA detectors and 270s, signals are ceiling mount Genesis horn/strobes (and strobes in restrooms) in white.

Panel–Couch modular panel

Initiating devices–F1A OEM “chevron” pulls and Chemetron 500 heat sensors

Signaling devices–Couch vibrating 6 inch bells

This system is also in the hands of a collector

Kroger–same system as Newberry’s except with the use of flush mounted 350A horns

A&P–closed 1995, space was a Payless ShoeSource until 2019, which got an EST1 with EST branded 1400 “doorknob” smokes “Pre-Integrity” (792 horn/strobes) and conventional 270s–the majority of the system ended up at an electronics recycler (pulls were scrapped) when they went bankrupt and left; third and current tenant is an Ace Hardware with a Notifier NFS–3030 system that includes the System Sensor L series and NBG-12Ls and respective smokes in backrooms.

Panel–Fire-Lite non-code system

Initiating devices–Fire-Lite BG-5; Chemetron 500s in stockrooms

Signaling devices–Fire-Lite 350A (surface mounted)

This system was unfortunately scrapped–except for the panel and pull stations, which were donated to a fire museum in another metropolitan area.

Twin-screen movie theatre (closed in 2005–used as an indoor trampoline park–signals swapped out with Federal Signal 350B’s in red–original signals sent to a local hospital for spare components on their FA system; pulls replaced with Simplex 2099-9754’s–originals are at fire museum)

Panel–Simplex 4246-1 with march time master code generator; same Pyrotronics auxiliary relay cabinet

Initiating devices–Simplex 4250 break glass stations, Pyrotronics F3 detectors in projection , mechanical/electrical and storage rooms

Signaling devices–Simplex 4045 chimes

I accidentally deleted the original but Here is my System.

Super Cool High School.
Built in 1977.

Original Alarms

Fire Lite BG6s and Simplex 4251-20s with Metal Handels.

Simplex 4050-80s with Simplex 4040s and Wheelock 7002Ts (In classrooms).

Fire Lite Panel.

Some Kind of Smoke Detector.

1984 Some Idiot purposely threw a Basketball at one of the 4050-80s in the Gym. Kid was suspended and the 4050-80 was replaced by a 2903 with a 2901-9838.

1988 All but 4 BG6s were “Upgraded” to BG-10s. Obviously this was a Mistake because those have issues.

1992 System Sensor MASS ADAs replaced the 4050-80s and the one 2903. Some 4050-80s remain, but inactive. The BG-10s were replaced with Edwards 270-SPOs.

2000 The Panel was Replaced by a Edwards Panel and Edwards Integrity Speaker Strobes were added which replaced many of the MASS ADAs.

2002 Most of the 7002Ts stopped working and were replaced. The rest still work.

2010 All But 2 Edwards 270-SPOs were Replaced with Edwards 278B-1120s.

2012 The Smoke Detectors were replaced with System Sensor i3s.

2018 1/2 of the MASSs stopped working and were replaced with Advance Speaker Strobes. 10 Still Remain and work.

2020 The 7002Ts were decommissioned and replaced with L Series Speaker Strobes.

2021 STI Stopper IIs were added on most of the Pull Stations.

2024 All the BG6s were Removed and Replaced with Edwards 278Bs. The MASSs were decommissioned and replaced with LED Genesis’s. Surprisingly the Simplex 4251-20s never got removed. Likely as a reminder of what the School Had.

Fire Alarms at the Michael School:

Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9417/9418/9419 SmartSync Horn Strobes from 1999. The horn grille is smaller. Horn strobes are even located in bathrooms! These devices are located in the older sections of the building. This section was mostly renovated in 2000, however there are some unrenovated areas original to when the school was built in 1965. The QuickAlerts most likely replaced an old standard electric time system. There is 1 QuickAlert that has been replaced with a multi candela TrueAlert. About half of the QuickAlerts in the school are mounted on skirts, and this only applies to the 1965 section.

Simplex TrueAlert ES LED Horn Strobes 59AV-WRF and 59AV-WRFH. These horn strobes are located in the newer 2019 section of the building. There are remote strobes in the bathrooms in this section. All QuickAlerts that were originally in this section were removed from service. Most of the models were 4903-9417, but there were a couple that were the 9418s and a couple that were the 9419s.

Smokes are all addressable 4098s and pulls are 4099-9001 as well as 4099-9004. The entire system is set to code 3 and it sounds like the QuickAlerts and TrueAlert ES LEDs are fighting one another. It’s like Team QuickAlert vs Team TrueAlert ES LED. It’s always fun sitting in class during a fire drill because both models are incredibly loud.

All strobes flash until system reset because all devices are wired up as 4 wire. The system believe it or not does Code 3. There is also one random Space Age A32 120CD strobe plate with a silver plated mechanical horn on this system which is the Space Age equivalent to the 2901-9838. There’s also a 1st generation SpectrAlert Classic P24110 Horn Strobe. It is a screw mounting style and the strobe is fixed 110CD. Like the earliest Simplex QuickAlerts and some of the 4903s, this device is from 1999. There are also some ADA Wheelock RSSP strobe plates, which also replaced some old non-ada Simplex strobe plates. Some RSSPs are fixed candela, most are multi candela, but there is also one high candela unit

Fire Alarms in the Yorktown Mall:

Main Mall:

Conventional Horn Strobe System (Late 1990’s 4004 System, mixed codings, some horns sound in code 3, some in March time and some in continuous. All horn strobes are wired up as 4 wire, so strobes will continue to flash when the system is silenced)

Stores

Macy’s/Macy’s Furniture:
Store was built sometime in 1992, but alarms were added in 1999-2000
Simplex 4903-9236 Horn Strobes (15CD Green Asterisk, most of these are in the fitting room areas as they don’t need a very bright strobe)

Simplex 4904-9137 Remote Strobes (Bathrooms, 15CD strobe Green Asterisk)
Alarms are coded to March Time by the FACP NACs, the horns are actually louder than the 1994-96 electromechanical horn strobes.

Store was also built in 2000, just like Kohl’s
Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9419 Horn Strobes
Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9418 Horn Strobes
Simplex QuickAlert 4904-9332 Remote Strobes
The devices don’t have the interesting grille style, but are still QuickAlerts whatsoever. Alarms sound in Code 3.

All devices have the interesting grille style unlike Best Buy. Alarms sound in Code 3, once again.

Restaurants

Joker’s Bar & Grill:
Restaurant is from 1999
Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9417 Horn Strobes
Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9418 Horn Strobes
Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9419 Horn Strobes
Simplex QuickAlert 4904-9331 Remote Strobes
Simplex QuickAlert 4904-9332 Remote Strobe

These QuickAlerts, unlike the ones in Best Buy have the Interesting Grille style where the horn is smaller on horn strobes and has bumps on the remote strobe where the horn would be. Some QuickAlerts are mounted on skirts. There are a couple fails in this restaurant. 1. One of the QuickAlerts is mounted crooked in the kitchen. 2. One of the QuickAlerts is cemented into the wall. Interestingly enough, most of the devices have a colored shape on the strobe reflector. The food and drinks here are amazing! People love it! The alarms are set on Code 3. There’s a pool table and arcade in the restaurant!

Karaoke Pub:
Restaurant is from the 1980’s, alarm signals added sometime in the 1990’s
Space Age A32+SH24D Horns (120CD strobe plates and naked Simplex 2901-9838 silver plated horns)
Simplex 4903-9219 Electromechanical Horn strobe
Simplex 4903-9215 Electromechanical Horn strobes (most signals are 9215s)
Simplex 4903-9217 Electromechanical Horn strobe
Wheelock Exceeder HSR Horn Strobe (Set on 110CD)

Simplex 4904-9135 Remote Strobes (30CD, 60FPM)
Simplex 4904-9136 Remote Strobe (110CD, 60FPM)
Simplex 4904-9112 Remote Strobe (110CD, 24FPM)

The food here is pretty good! The fire alarms in this restaurant are actually incredibly loud as all mechanical horns are on continuous and the Exceeder and Advances are on High volume code 3! Ouch! The Space Age and Simplex devices are the most interesting, but are the most unpleasant interruption for the restaurant.

Kings Diner
Restaurant was built in the 1970’s, but most signals were added in the 2010’s with some older signals from 1999
Simplex TrueAlert 4906-9127 Horn Strobes

Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9417 Horn Strobe (Kitchen)
People like all 3 meals offered at this restaurant. The breakfasts, lunches and dinners here are very nice and the ice cream for dessert is delicious! So many flavors and toppings! The alarms in here sound in Code 3 again.

Japanese Restaurant
This all you can eat Japanese restaurant is very new - built in 2022

Now note that the main areas of the mall look sort of similar to Cape Cod Mall; except the strobes are a lot brighter in a lot more areas.

Fire Alarms at the Kingstown YMCA:

Each Gender will find:

  1. 15 Simplex QuickAlert/TrueAlert 4903-9419 Horn Strobes (3 of them are QuickAlerts from the 17th-25th weeks of 2000 (1 was made on the 17th week, one on the 20th week and 1 on the 25th week), 8 are QuickAlerts from the 38th-41st weeks of 2000 (2 on the 38th week, 6 on the 41st week), and 4 are TrueAlerts from the 45th week of 2003). 8 of these horn strobes are mounted on skirts and they are all in the weight/cardio rooms and formerly the pool area until all 4 4903-9419 110CD QuickAlerts got replaced with 4906-9127 Multi CD TrueAlerts set on 110CD.
  2. 2 Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9418 Horn Strobes (Both made on the 16th week of 2000)
  3. 1 Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9417 Horn Strobe (Made on the 13th week of 2000). This horn strobe is actually in very bad condition. You can actually barely even see the strobe flashing. It’s super dim, about as dim as a Simplex 2903 or Wheelock 7002T. Also the horn is not as loud as it should be. There’s a bunch of humidity making the horn a lot quieter and raspier to the point where it sounds like :poop:! This -9417 is having issues!
  4. 7 Simplex QuickAlert 4904-9331 Remote Strobes (All made on the 37th-40th weeks of 2000). Both 4904-9331s in the renovated single person restrooms are in absolutely :poop: condition. The one in the fitness room is in okay condition, just a bit of paint on the sides. 2 of the 4904-9331s are mounted on skirts and those are in very good condition.
  5. 2 Simplex QuickAlert 4904-9332 Remote Strobes (1 was made 15th week of 2000, the other on the 34th week of 2000). These ones are in good condition! One of them is mounted on a skirt.
  6. 1 Simplex QuickAlert 4904-9333 Remote Strobe (Made on the 11th week of 2000). In fairly good condition, a little scuff on the strobe and little drip of paint.
  7. 6 Simplex 4906-9127 Horn Strobes (Made sometime in the 2020-2024 and all replaced 4903-9419 QuickAlert Horn Strobes and therefore are all set to 110CD). The ones in the pool are mounted on skirts.
  8. 1 Simplex 4906-9101 Remote Strobe (Made 2012, in a renovated locker room bathroom area on 15CD)
  9. 4 Simplex 4906-9102 Remote Strobes (In men’s locker room, all set on a different candela setting from one another 1 of them is set on 15CD, 1 on 30CD, 1 on 75CD and 1 on 110CD. These alarms are in excellent shape. The one that was set on 15CD has a little mark on the strobe but is still in good shape.

System is believe it or not, conventional! The pull stations are 2099-9754 T-Bar pull stations. All horn strobes sound in Code 3, with most horn strobes being 110CD and most remote strobes being 15CD. There’s only 1 horn strobe in the men’s locker room, everything else is a remote strobe. The boy’s locker room has 2 horn strobes and 2 remote strobes. All horn strobes in the pool area have been replaced. The gymnasium has cages over all alarms and pull stations. All 4903-9419 horn strobes in weight rooms are mounted on skirts. The 4903-9419s in the yoga room are mounted on mirrors and not skirts. The 4903-9419s that were mounted on the skirts and mirrors are very clean, possibly the cleanest 9419s ever in the building; no paint, scuffs or scratches. The 4906-9127 replacement in the gym is also very clean. The strobe reflectors on all those devices are super shiny. Some of the skirts are not in the best shape, but the 4903-9419s, 4904-9331s and 4904-9332 on the skirts are in super good condition.

Fire Alarms each gender would find before replacements:

Originally there were 21 Simplex 4903-9419 Horn/Strobes (6 of them got replaced with 4906-9127 Horn Strobes)
4 Simplex 4904-9332 Strobes (2 of them are gone prior to Locker Room renovation and 4906-9102s took their place)
10 Simplex 4904-9331 Strobes (3 are Gone prior to Locker Room Renovation; 4906-9101/9102 Strobes took their place)

Since this system is Conventional, the panel is a Simplex 4006! You thought it was going to be a 4010 or 4020, maybe 4008? Well this is a smaller facility, so they decided to install all conventional devices! No the pull stations are not 4099-9001 nor 9003, they are 2099s! The smokes are Conventional 4098s.

This YMCA has a Dover Impulse Elevator and they have American Standard fixtures from the early 2000’s in the bathrooms.

However the Dance Studio right next door to this YMCA does have a Simplex 4020, 4099-9003 and 4098 Addressable Smokes. The Dance Studio doesn’t have 4903-9417s or 4904-9333s. This Dance Studio next door has:

Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9418 (From 2000)
Simplex QuickAlert/Early TrueAlert 4903-9419 (From 2000-2001)
Simplex 4904-9331 (From 2001-2002)
Simplex 4904-9332 (From 2001-2002)
Simplex 4906-9127 (Replacements from 2010s-2020s)
Simplex 4904-9176 (From 2002)
Simplex 4904-9174 (From 2002)
Wheelock HSR (Surprise replacement from 2016)

Notes:

The 4904-9176/9174 strobes are set on SmartSync as all the other Simplex Strobes are SmartSync. The Wheelock Exceeder however its strobe actually syncs with the Simplex devices though the Horn doesn’t.

This building actually has an Otis Series 1 Elevator and has a mixture of Kohler and Crane Plumbing fixtures from the early 2000’s.

Sts. Agatha & Andrew Catholic Parish

A fictional inner-city (same city as the previous posts) Roman Catholic parish established in the late 1800s; no FA systems until the 1950s. first church was a standard wood frame building used until 1912, when the present church was constructed in an Italianate style–it would be remodeled and expanded in 1948.
The frame building would be used as the first parish school until 1928, when the present one was built on the grounds of it–received matching additions in 1952. An Otis bottom drive traction elevator was installed in one of the additions (building is three floors).

The combined convent and rectory were constructed around 1954 to replace a four-square (standard inner-city residential housing stock) house built around 1897

Church: no FA system

Rectory and convent:

Panel–Edwards 1300 with march time master code

Initiating devices-- Edwards 227 pull stations at exits; 240 series heat sensors in all rooms except bathrooms

Signaling devices-- Edwards 18 chimes and 340T system trouble bell

The school did not get a fire alarm system until 1953–before the automatic one was installed, the only method of signaling was a pull rod, which would get an actuator switch.

The building has the same system as the rectory, but with 4-4-4-4 master code and 360 Adaptahorns (heat sensors are only in mechanical/boiler–FACP is located in that room–and storage rooms, as required by code).

Fire Alarms in Edwards High School:
Panel is a Simplex 4120 voice-evacuation system, and is the original to when the school was built in 2002. All alarms are Simplex 4903-9150 speaker/strobes, even in restrooms. The exception of the larger rooms such as the gymnasium, cafeteria and auditorium, those have Simplex 4903-9149 speaker/strobes. The science classrooms and music band room have Simplex 4903-9148 speaker/strobes. The pull stations are Simplex 4099-9003 dual action T-Bars and detectors are Addressable Simplex TrueAlarms which are 4098-9714 heads on 4098-9792 bases. 4903-9149s, 4099-9003s and 4098-9714/9792s in the gymnasium have cages over them, while the cafeteria and auditorium don’t. Alarms play a code 3 tone. The voice message played is a very effective male voice message that sounds like this “Attention, may I have your attention please? There has been a fire emergency reported in the building. Please proceed to the nearest exit and leave the building. Do not use the elevators, I repeat do not use the elevators”

It’s quite interesting and rare to find 4903s on an Early 2000’s voice system.

The Elevator in this school is a Schindler and restroom fixtures are mostly Crane Plumbing, some American Standard and Kohler replacements take place.

EHS Badgers!

Fire Alarms at Wayne High School:

Former system (1993-94):

Space Age A32+SH24D horn strobe combos (1993)
Simplex 4903-9105+2901-9838 horn strobe combos (1993)
Simplex 4903-9202 horn strobes (1994)
Simplex 4903-9219 horn strobes (1994)
Simplex 4903-9215 horn strobes (1994)
Simplex 4903-9217 horn strobes (1994)
Simplex 4903-9252 horn strobes (Replacements of 4903-9219 horn strobes)
Simplex 4903-9254 horn strobes (Replacements of 4903-9202/4903-9217 horn strobes)
Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9427 horn strobes (Installed in the cafeteria, these are from 2000)
Simplex 4904-9137 remote strobes (bathrooms from 1994)
Wheelock MT-24-WM (Installed outside)
Wheelock MTWP-24MCWH-FR (Installed outside)
Simplex 2099-9756 conventional dual action T-Bar pull stations
Simplex 2098-9575 conventional smoke detectors as well as 4098-96XX models

The system originally did continuous; it was changed to Code 3 in 2012. Strobes still continued to flash until system reset and no sync strobes.

Upgraded system (Summer 2024):

System Sensor P2RLED Horn Strobes
System Sensor SRLED Horn Strobes
System Sensor P2GRKLED Weatherproof horn strobes

System is a brand new notifier filtered DC panel with System Sensor sync enabled. All strobes are synchronized and are on code 3. These strobes draw a lower current draw than the old Space Age/Simplex horn strobes. The strobes are set on sync and audible silence mode. Some of the strobes in the bathrooms are now set on 30CD unlike the 4904-9137s which are only 15CD. They still have the brighter strobes in the larger rooms, but all the horn strobes in classrooms and hallways are now set on 75CD. Most of the strobes in the hallways and classrooms were just 15CD when all the Simplex horn strobes were installed. So now there is more candela and lower current draw as opposed to less candela and higher current draw as it was before.

They’ll be building a brand new building in this area.

I honestly wish that particular school was preserved and renovated. it’s amazing that it lasted a little over a century. unfortunately, the new building will be be made of cheap-ass materials that will only last 25 years.
