Fire Alarms in a restaurant part of an office building. The 1st floor looks like a rest area:

The building was built in 2003. All alarms installed are original installs.

Most alarms are Simplex TrueAlert 4903-9418 horn/strobes
There is also one Simplex TrueAlert 4903-9419 horn/strobe
There is also surprisingly a Simplex 4903-9253 horn/strobe
The bathroom alarms are Simplex TrueAlert 4904-9332 remote strobes

Everything here is 75CD, minus the one 4903 which is 30CD and a 110CD TrueAlert. The alarms in the lobby are the loudest because they echo a lot. The 4903-9253’s strobe is set to SmartSync. For the panel, we’ve got a Simplex 4010 Red Cabinet version. Our pull stations are 4099-9003 and smokes being 4098-9714/9792s

There will be a brand new shopping center in this area very soon. The devices will be System Sensor LED L Series.

I wonder if this particular shopping center was similar to the Arcade in Cleveland, which is the oldest (surviving) enclosed shopping center in the US. I don’t think they had strip type centers until the 1920s or 30s.

by the way, what on earth is wrong with people in your fictitious city–it almost reminds me of Akron, can’t they see the historic value in these kinds of buildings? I bet the new one will have a lot of issues right as it opens.

Simplex High School Fire Alarms:

Panel is a Simplex 4120 which is the original to when the school was built in 2000. All signals are Simplex 4903-9303 speaker/strobes, with smaller rooms having Simplex 4903-9301 speaker strobes and larger rooms having simplex 4903-9305 speaker strobes. In smaller classrooms and bathrooms there is a mixture of Simplex 4904-9305 remote strobes, Simplex 4904-9301 remote strobes, Simplex QuickAlert 4904-9331 remote strobes and Simplex QuickAlert 4904-9332 remote strobes. There are also some early TrueAlert speaker strobes from 2000 as well which are the Simplex 4903-9357 speaker strobes and Simplex 4903-9358 speaker strobes.

Fictional high school in England:

This post will be gradually updated

Built: 1972
Opened: 1975
First expansion: 1989
Second expansion: 1997
Third expansion: 2003

Fire alarm systems:

First system: 1975-1982
FTW Alarms key switch operated fire alarm system, break glass with hammer call points, solenoid fire bells.

Second system: 1982-1989
Unknown addressable fire alarm panel, smoke and heat detectors, call points, sounders, xenon strobes, the system was partially decommissioned in 1989 when the high school was expanded. However parts still remain in 2024 such as the main panel.

Fire Alarms in a Student Center built in 1968:

Original system:

Vintage Standard Time Electric Fire Alarm Horns/Bells
Simplex 4050-80 Horn/Light Combos with mixed Mechanical Horns
Simplex 4903-9101
Space Age A32

This former system wasn’t doing too well.

Current system (Upgraded in 1996-97):

10-12+ Simplex 4903-9219 Electromechanical Horn/Strobes (15CD)
7-9+ Simplex 4903-9215 Electromechanical Horn/Strobes (30CD)
7 Simplex 4903-9217 Electromechanical Horn/Strobes (110CD)
4 Simplex TrueAlert 4903-9425 Horn/Strobes (15CD)
14+ Simplex TrueAlert 4903-9426 Horn/Strobes (75CD)
12 Simplex TrueAlert 4903-9427 Horn/Strobes (110CD)
1 Simplex 4903-9254 Replacement Horn/Strobe from 2023 (110CD)
11 Simplex 4904-9137 Remote Strobes (15CD)
4+ Simplex TrueAlert 4904-9168 Remote Strobes (15CD)
4+ Simplex TrueAlert 4904-9169 Remote Strobes (75CD)
3 Simplex TrueAlert 4904-9170 Remote Strobes (110CD).

The system is set to Code 3, strobes are all set on 4 wire Audible Silence mode. Considering the electromechanical horn/strobes age, most still sound extremely healthy. The only 2 raspy sounding ones (One of them is an 4903-9219 and the other is a 4903-9217) are in a hallway and the cafeteria. There’s also one High Pitched Simplex 9219 and one Low Pitched Simplex 9219. There’s also a low pitched Simplex 9217. The electromechanical alarms on the top floor sound the best and there’s the most amount on the top floor. There’s also one 4903-9219 that sounds like a 2901-9838. One of the classrooms with a Simplex 4903-9215 horn/strobe; that horn strobe is actually incredibly loud. All the 9215s sound the way they are supposed to sound. None are higher pitched and none are lower pitched and none are raspy. All pull stations are Simplex 2099-9756 and the smokes are vintage 2098s with replacement 4098 conventional smokes. This system is 100% conventional. All the TrueAlerts on this system are Free Run, not SmartSync.

Fire Alarms in an old High school built in 1936. The system was upgraded in the mid 1990’s to a Conventional Notifier System. The strobes are very out of sync. This school is very old, went through many expansions, renovations and replacements.

Most Signals are System Sensor MASSADAs (Different candela ratings), but
Renovated areas that have System Sensor SpectrAlert Classic Horn Strobes. Most are second generation fixed candela models, some are first generation with the screw and some are third generation with a multi candela strobe. There’s a few MAEH horn strobes in the Gymnasium on the electromechanical tone.

There are a few replacement 4 wire SpectrAlert Advance Horn Strobes

There is also a replacement 4 wire L-Series Horn Strobe replacing a defective sounder strobe in July 2023.

An area renovated in 2010 has System Sensor P2R 1st Generation Horn Strobes with strobes all synchronized.

There’s also a renovated section in 2018 that has 2 System Sensor L Series Horn Strobes where the strobes are synchronized including ceiling mounted units. Strobes are set to synchronized audible silence. They are in sync with all the 2 wire SpectrAlert Advance Horn strobes.

They are working on adding a new renovated section for the new year with 2 wire LED L-Series horn strobes that will likely sync up with the xenon 2 wire L-Series from 2018 and 2 wire advances from 2010.

The 4 wire Horn Strobes are set to continuous and the 2 wire Horn Strobes are set to code 3.

The way that they have the 4 wire advances/L Series configured is that they have separate wires going to the horn and strobe and the installers decided to put it on the coded setting so that the devices could run more smoothly. The advances and L-Series are out of sync in those areas. The renovated areas have all Addressable Notifier components, but the not renovated areas have conventional Notifier technology as most of the system is. This whole system is a retrofitted system. The sounder strobes replaced old AC Simplex Horns. The old system had a problem which is why they had to switch. But guess what coding the system is in the conventional wings; 120BPM March Time! Another thing about the panels is that both Notifier panels put out filtered DC. It’s a very professional setup. Luckily, there is no plans on upgrading the system for many years to come.

Fire Alarms in an old Elementary, Middle and High School that was going to be demolished in Summer 2024 but not. Spoiler alert! All they’ll do is just organize the building and clean it up, replace the things that need to get replaced and build a brand new section that will connect to the old one, which will probably have Simplex TrueAlert Horn Strobes or Speaker Strobes. The school does not have any speaker strobes. Who knows if they’ll be Free Run or SmartSync? There’s both Free Run and SmartSync TrueAlerts installed currently. There’s also some QuickAlerts, too. They could also possibly be Simplex 4903s/4904s that are selectable, which would be a quite unusual install. But most of the school is Simplex, so they want to keep it that way, but this school has a whole mix of Fire Alarms:

Simplex Fire Alarms:

Most Signals are Simplex 4903-9101+2901-9838 Horn/Strobe Combos
There’s also some 2903 strobe plates.
There’s also many other different types of 2901 mechanical horns on the strobe plates.
There’s a Simplex 4903-9202 Electromechanical Horn Strobe
There’s also some Simplex 4903-9219/9215/9217 Electromechanical Horn Strobes installed sometime between 1997-98. All of them have colored shapes on strobe reflectors.
There’s some Simplex 4903-9236/9237/9238 Electronic Horn Strobes installed in 1999 (According to the different Simplex logo, like the Electromechanical versions, there is a colored shape on the strobe reflectors also, though the horns, model number tags, simplex logos and strobe reflectors are different. Some models are from 2000. There is also one Simplex -9236 from earlier 1999 before they changed the Simplex logo in a locker room and it’s in very bad shape, lots of paint and dust, loss of color, faded ‘FIRE’ lettering, lots of black dots in the strobe making the strobe very very dim, EXCUSE MY LANGUAGE. The strobe is as dim as f**k. You can barely see it flashing. It’s arguably just as dim as all the 4903-9101s and 2903-9101s. The other electronic horn strobes are in much better shape than that 4903-9236 is and are much brighter too. Also a little newer as well by months up to over a year. There’s other 9236s too, but they seem to give more of the actual 15CD output, but they aren’t that bright either)
There’s also some Simplex 4903-9417/9418/9419 Horn Strobes (Most of them are QuickAlerts, but there’s some that are just fixed candela SmartSync TrueAlerts and most were installed in 1999 but some are 2000 models. The QuickAlerts and TrueAlerts have different strobe reflectors)
There’s also some Free Run 4903-9425/9426/9427 TrueAlerts as well with a few being QuickAlerts
There’s some selectable 4903-9252/9253/9254 horn strobes
There’s also some Simplex 4906-9127/9128/9139/9140 Multi Candela SmartSync TrueAlerts installed.
There’s also some various 4904 Non ADA, 24FPM, Free Run, and Selectable units as well as TrueAlert/QuickAlert Free Run and SmartSync remote strobes installed.
There’s also some vertical mounted Simplex 4903-9220 horn strobes

Recap of the school: It is a very old brick building; built in 1955. It has an amazing mix of fire alarms. It is basically a whole town public school. All gyms have very bright strobed alarms. This is probably one of the coolest schools to ever exist, which is why it will stay as is, just with new buildings connected to it or surrounded by it. The parking here is crazy, the parking is a problem. There’s actually some newer buildings in the school that have Simplex 4903 and TrueAlert speaker strobes as well as Wheelock ET70 multi candela speaker strobes, regardless of what I said earlier. The whole system setups are 100% conventional, the installers did not want to have to deal with the pain of installing an addressable system. There’s already a lot of electricity coming from the fire alarm signals. Fire Drills actually don’t happen very often in this school, but they do test the alarms on the second Friday of January every year after the kids are gone. All of the alarms are on code 3.

i’m glad this school was saved from being imploded (if three floors) or the wrecking ball, I wonder if it has any cool mid-century architectural features (obviously the clay facing tile in the hallways).

Simplex 4903-9238 Horn Strobes
Simplex 4903-9426 Horn Strobes
Simplex 4903-9427 Horn Strobes

There’s even 4903-9237 Horn Strobes in the Bathrooms, oddly. All the 4903-9237s have a ‘30CD’ sticker on the strobe reflector as well as a newer Simplex logo from 1999-2000. The 4903-9238s are also made during that 1999-2000 Timeline. The 4 Wire TrueAlerts are replacements and addons for newer wings. The entire system is on Code 3 4 wire audible silence. All the 4903s are mounted on backboxes. The horns are arguably louder than 1998 models and are lower pitched. The TrueAlerts are higher pitched and less loud than SmartSync TrueAlerts and they sound at the exact same time as the 4903s. The system is a 4100+ coding the alarms to code 3.

Fire Alarms at a office building; A mix of Simplex QuickAlert and TrueAlert SmartSync units:

Simplex 4906-9127 Multi Candela SmartSync TrueAlert Horn Strobes
Simplex 4906-9101 Multi Candela SmartSync TrueAlert Remote Strobes
Simplex 4904-9331 Fixed 15CD SmartSync QuickAlert Remote Strobes from 2000 (In a bathroom in the laundry room)
Simplex 4903-9417 Fixed 15CD SmartSync QuickAlert Horn Strobes from 2000 (These were installed in a smaller spaces in the storage area)
Simplex 4903-9418 Fixed 75CD SmartSync QuickAlert Horn Strobes from 2000 (Some of these were installed in the large storage area)
Simplex 4903-9419 Fixed 110CD SmartSync QuickAlert Horn Strobes from 2000 (Some of these were installed in the large storage area)

The QuickAlerts are from the 26th-43rd weeks of 2000. No TrueAlert marking on the left as well as a different strobe reflector from the TrueAlerts. The TrueAlerts are from 2016-2017. The strobes on the TrueAlerts/QuickAlerts are in sync but the horns aren’t.

Fire Alarms in a BJ’s in the town of Blackberry (Built in 1996-1998):

Simplex 4903-9217 Horn Strobes (All of them have an Orange Triangle on the strobe reflector and most are mounted on backboxes (some aren’t) and some are on the ceiling because of the 360° that the strobe provides). Some of the horns sound raspy.

Space Age A32+SH24D (Later models)

Simplex TrueAlert 4903-9427 Horn Strobes (2 of them are QuickAlerts from 2000)

Simplex 4903-9254 Horn Strobes

Simplex 4906-9151 Speaker Strobes (Installed in a newer wing)

Simplex 4906-9153 Speaker Strobes (Installed in a newer wing)

There’s possibly some news that this system may be getting an upgrade in the next couple of years unfortunately, the system itself is having some problems, which won’t affect the alarms operation, it’s just the panel itself. It looks like it is about to go defunct. The only real issue is that the Simplex 9217s may sound a bit raspy, but you just have to play around with it to make it sound good. There’s some dusty 9217s which is one reason for the raspy sound. These 9217s like said are newer 9217s due to having an orange triangle on the strobe reflector to indicate ‘110CD strobe’ which most 9217s in public don’t. All the 9217 strobes are out of sync due to the horn strobes being wired up as 4 wire devices. As a matter of fact you can actually see some of the model number stickers on the Simplex 4903-9217 Horn Strobes. You’ll notice that those horn strobes were made in 1997 according to the date code. Some of the horn strobes have black dots on the strobe reflector. I also do believe there are some Simplex 4903-9238 Electronic Horn Strobes here as well. Those also have an orange triangle on the strobe reflector and were most likely the 1998 installs while the 4903-9217s were the 1997 installs. The Space Age alarms were the 1996 installs. The bathrooms have Simplex 4904-9135 remote strobes, while there are some Simplex 4904-9136 & 4904-9170 remote strobes installed around the store. The pulls are Simplex 2099-9754 Single Action T-Bars and the smokes are mixed 2098s. The panel is a Simplex 4004. There’s even a 4903-9217 located in a small hallway right by a door that leads to a smaller office space. That -9217 is actually in very good condition and the strobe on that thing is so bright, the coverage in that small hallway is very excessive. There’s even extra bright overhead lights in that hallway which makes it even more bright. That’s basically the way it is in the whole store, everything is just wowing bright! There’s some Simplex 4903-9215s in the post office section with the blue circles on the strobe reflector to indicate 30CD, except for a couple that don’t have anything to indicate the 30CD. They’re still quite bright, but a little less bright than the 9217s. The bathrooms in the post office have Simplex 4904-9135 30CD remote strobes also. There’s some Wheelock MT-24-WMs outside as well with the weatherproof 117CD Strobe

Simplex 4904-9174 Strobes (Replacements, selectable 30CD)
Simplex 4904-9169 Strobes (Free Run 75CD)
Simplex 4904-9170 Strobes (Free Run 110CD)

Simplex TrueAlert 4903-9427 Horn/Strobes (Free Run 110CD)

All pulls are Simplex 2099-9756 Dual Action Conventional T-Bars running off of a Simplex 4005. Smokes are 2098 and 4098 conventional detectors. Horns are Coded to Code 3, with non coded unsynced silenceable strobes.

Starbucks Redwood (Next to Redwood Public Library):

Simplex 4903-9236 Horn/Strobes (From 1998-99)
Simplex 4904-9137 Strobes (From 1998-99)

These Horns are on Continuous, strobes are not synced and non-silenceable. Also these strobes are much dimmer than the library. System is a Simplex 4005 and Simplex 2099-9756 Dual Action Conventional T-Bars. Smokes are 2098 conventional detectors.

Fire Alarms at the Franklin Public Library (Simplex 4100+ from 2000-2001):

Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9419 Horn/Strobes (40th-43rd weeks of 2000)
Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9418 Horn/Strobes (37th-38th weeks of 2000)
Simplex QuickAlert 4904-9332 Strobes (40th and 43rd weeks of 2000)
Simplex TrueAlert 4906-9127 Horn/Strobes (110CD)
Simplex 4099-9003/9006 Dual Action T-Bars
Simplex 4098-97XX Addressable Smokes

Franklin Starbucks (Below Library):

Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9417 Horn/Strobes (All are from the 35th week of 2000)
Simplex QuickAlert 4904-9331 Strobes (Both are from the 35th week of 2000)

The System is set to Code 3. The difference between this and the Redwood is that the Starbucks is attached to the Library, but at Redwood, it’s next to. There are two public libraries in Kingstown 1 is very new from 2022 and just has boring System Sensor L-Series Horn Strobes and Remote Strobes on an Addressable Notifier System but the other Library is very old from 1929 and has Federal Signal 450D, Space Age AV32+2DCD Combos, Simplex 4903-9101+2901-9838/34T-24 combos, Simplex 4903-9105+2901-9838/9846 Silver plated combos, Wheelock EHS-EL1s, Simplex 4903-9202/9219/9220 Electromechanical Horn Strobes, Simplex QuickAlert 4903-9417 Horn Strobes from 1999, Wheelock 7002T-24s, System Sensor MASS24M and MASS241575ADA Sounder Strobes, System Sensor P241575 1st Generation Horn Strobes, Wheelock MT-24-LSM and 4904-9137 strobes for the bathrooms all set on Continuous all on a Simplex 4002 and it is like the coolest system ever, though the YMCA in the town has Simplex QuickAlert/TrueAlert Horn and Remote Strobes. The Four Points Hotel Built in 1977 has QuickAlert/Early TrueAlert Speaker Strobes and Remote Strobes. The Kingstown High School formerly had Simplex QuickAlert Horn and Remote strobes plus multi candela TrueAlerts that replaced them, but it got wiped with an EST4 Voice Evacuation System in July 2024. Just what is the deal with all the Fire Alarm Systems in Kingstown?

By 4902-9701 do you mean 4902-9703 or 2902-9701?

I was referencing the 4902-9721 (it was just a keyboard error in the initial post)

Smokes are Simplex 4098-9714

Most of the horn strobes were just 15CD, which includes all the hallways and classrooms. Additional 75CD Horn Strobes were added in the department offices, science classrooms, weight room, yoga room, a larger classroom on the 3rd floor, art classrooms, by the main stairwell, music/band classrooms and lobby. There’s were also some locker rooms with 75CD horn strobes. Additional 110CD Horn Strobes were added in the lobby, cafeteria, a science lab workspace in the basement, library, gymnasiums and auditorium. Most of the remote strobes were only 15CD, so not very bright. The only 2 75CD remote strobes were in the main office and in a locker room. 3 Simplex 4906-9127 replacement horn strobes take place. 1 of them replaced a not so happy 4903-9419 110CD Horn/Strobe in the B Gym in 2023 with a very severely cracked housing and a cage that was not sealed on properly. 1 of them replaced a 4903-9417 15CD Horn/Strobe with a broken strobe in 2021
1 of them replaced a 4903-9418 75CD Horn/Strobe in 2019 with a broken horn
A Simplex 4906-9101 remote strobe replaced a dead Simplex 4904-9331 strobe in the men’s room. The system that took place before renovation was an old AC Simplex System with 4040 Horns. But since the renovation in 2000-2001 caused the alarms to get replaced with Simplex QuickAlerts. Now the QuickAlerts are gone and upgraded to a much quieter lower powered EST Voice Evacuation System. This school also has much better lighting than it used to as that problem was fixed in 2020 during the COVID Pandemic.

The Elevators that this school uses are Otis Series 1 Elevators. They haven’t been replaced. The restrooms have Kohler Dexter urinals and Kingston toilets.

All of the horn strobes have the smaller hole as the horn and the remote strobes have the bumps in the middle.
