Make Up a System (2.0)

Uh, the 9422 isn’t a TrueAlert, its the electronic version of the 4903 series. As for it not being able to do code-3, well some systems have some of the horns doing continuous and another of the same horns doing code-3 so that is what I was going with if you are interested. Whether there was another panel or not, you can decide.

Anyway, the William R. Horton High School which has room for 1400 students is set up like this.
The hallways have Simplex 2903+2901-9806s. The plates were strobes and the alarms are in continuous.

The weight room and the computer technology classroom each have one Simplex 4903-9105+2901-9846.

The drama classroom has a Space Age Electronics AV32+Simplex 4051. Its a light plate that blinks. The original 4050-85 plate gave out.

The greenhouse has a lower pitch Edwards 892-1B horn/strobe.

The art room and the guidance office has a Simplex GX-90 horn/strobe set to code-3.

The chorus room has a Wheelock NS set to code-3.
Whoops, I apologize. I was going off of what had been discussed in the topic already and didn’t bother to check the model number myself.

My bad!

No, it’s on me. Those rectangular alarms are pretty hard to tell apart unless they go off.

Next up we have Oakdale Elementary School with a grand total of 521 students.
All of the hallways except the additional wing that was added when it changed from a K-3 school to a PK-5 school have Simplex 4051 horns on 4050-85 light plates. They blink.

The addition which is a 4th/5th grade wing had Simplex 9806 horns on 2903 strobe plates.

The art/music classroom has a Wheelock 34T-24+WS-24.

The preschool classroom which was the former art/music classroom was redone and the alarm in there was a Simplex 9833 horn on a 2903 light plate.

The entryway was also redone a few years into the new millennium and the alarms there are SpectrAlert Advances in Code-3.

There is an Edwards Integrity in code-3 in the media center.

The Lily Cove Department Store

This department store was built in the late 1960’s, but its fire alarm system, a larger 4002, was installed in the late 1980’s. The panel has 16 zones, and the signals are on continuous.

 • The smoke detectors are Simplex 2098-9201 photoelectric heads on 2098-9536 four-wire bases. There are also Simplex 2098-9648 duct detectors, which are wired for fan control and supervisory.

 • The pull stations are mostly Simplex 4251-20’s.

 • Most of the signals are Simplex 2903-9101’s with grille-less 2901-9838’s.

 • There are 2904-9101 strobes on the ceilings. They have special ceiling markings.

 • The basement, which contains the hardware and home improvement sections, has Gamewell Centuries and Wheelock 32P-24’s behind flush mount plates. I assume these were the original devices.

 • The sub-basement has the same setup, but everything is surface-mounted.

 • The exterior signals are Wheelock MT-24-WM’s, set to code 3 horn.

A 696 student middle school, the Desmond R. Tucker Middle School is set up like this.
Hallways have Wheelock 7002s

The Mechanical Drawing classroom has a Wheelock 34 on a Space Age Electronics AV32 light plate

The Business classroom has a Gentex SHG

The Chorus classroom has an Edwards 892-1B

The Administration hallways have a Wheelock AS

And finally, the Media Center has a Wheelock MT-24-MCW-FR
Doubt it would have a conventional model, TrueAlert ES alarms are addressable only, but the only new device they made conventional was the 49CMTV(Not called a TrueAlert ES, since the wording on it only says TrueAlert and not TrueAlert ES, but uses the newer ES design/shape to it.).

Exactly what I meant by the conventional version of the LED alarm.

The Peter V. Chisholm High School which is right next door to Tucker Middle School has this setup.
Wheelock 7002T - Hallways (continuous)

Gentex SHG - Carpentry Room (continuous)

Simplex 4903-9501+2901-9838 - Graphics Room (continuous)

Wheelock 34 on a Space Age Electronics AV32 light plate - Band Room and Media Center (continuous, but the light blinks in code-3)

Wheelock MT - Automotive Classroom which is in a different building. Though the two garages have Wheelock 7002Ts (code-3 except for the 7002Ts which are continuous)

Wheelock NS - Wrestling Room (code-3)

NanoTrasen

This is the headquarters of NanoTrasen, a budding tech company, located in Mendell City, Massachusetts. The building was once a school, and has seen multiple expansions since it was built in 1956. The current panel, installed in 1982, is a Simplex 2120, with a march time card and voice capabilities. It has no tape player, just a microphone and a tone generator configured to play a slow whoop tone. NAC 1 codes the horns, and NAC 2 is steady for the strobes, and NAC 3 is speakers (they do need to be on a separate NAC, right?).

 • The main section has Simplex-relabeled Statitrol ionization detectors with MAPNET circuitry.

 • The pull stations in main section are Simplex 2099-9781 T-bars. A few of these have been replaced with 2099-9795’s.

 • The main signals are Wheelock 34-24+WS-24’s.

 • There are also WS-24 strobes in the larger office floors.

 • The signal in the maintenance closet was replaced by a Simplex 4903-9425.

 • The dining hall and the green room (a repurposed gymnasium) have Wheelock 806+WS-24 speaker/strobes.

 • A small modular building was built in 1988, which now contains robotics labs. It uses a 2190-9156 class B ZAM and a 4009 NAC extender. The NAC extender is powered by the steady NAC.

 • The detectors are Simplex 2098-9635 photoelectric “wiffle ball” heads on 2098-9211 2-wire bases.

 • The pull stations are Simplex 4251-1 chevrons.

 • The signals are Wheelock 7002T-24’s.

 • A few of these have been replaced with Simplex 4903-9220’s.

 • When NanoTrasen bought the building in 1991, they added a section dedicated to internet-related R&D, which is now their cybersecurity center. It has a 2190-9154 class A ZAM and another 4009 NAC extender. Again, the extender is on the continuous NAC.

 • The detectors are Simplex 2098-9201 photoelectric heads on 2098-9211 2-wire bases.

 • The signals here are Simplex 2903-9101’s with grille-less 2901-9838’s.

 • There are 2904-9101 remote strobes, which are spaced in-between the horn/strobes.

 • The pull stations are mostly 4251-20’s, but a few were replaced with 2099-9768 chevrons.

 • One of them was replaced by a -9220.

 • There are four outdoor warning signals. Two are 34+WS’s from on the main wing. One is a 46T-G6-24 bell on the outside of the modular. And the new addition has a Simplex 2901-9846.

Now we get the Robert N. DePamphilis Elementary School with 344 students. The electromechanical horns and electronic horns are separate so electronic horns do code-3 and electromechanical horns do continuous. You decide what the panels are. Oh and the AV32 blinks so it may have to be on a different panel also.
Even though its a small school, the alarms they chose to use are Simplex 2901-9806+4903-9101s in the hallways which are not as loud as their Space Age Electronics counterparts but still its not advised to horse around in a fire drill.

The preschool classroom horn distressed the students so it was replaced with a Simplex 4903-9219.

The media center has an older alarm which is a 4041, the predecessor to the 4051 on a Space Age Electronics AV32 light plate that blinks.

The reading classroom’s 9806 broke down and was replaced by a Siemens U-HN-MCS.

4 Simplex 4903-9236 horns are in the multipurpose room which is used as the gym. They are set to code-3.

And the computer lab next to the media center has a Simplex TrueAlert, which also goes off in code-3.
They don’t need separate panels. They just need to be on separate notification appliance circuits (NACs), or be coded by strobe synchronization modules.

My high school had only one panel (a Simplex 4020). The old wing, which had 4051’s on 4050-80 plates, was on march time. The main wing, which had 4903-9219’s and GX-90S’s, was on continuous. The new wing had synchronized TrueAlerts, which were presumably coded by their SmartSync module. Yup, three different codes for one building.

Sometimes, the audibles and visuals are on separate NACs. For example, the old Simplex sync strobes flashed every time power was cut. They required the NAC to be coded to “pulse” (60 bpm march time) to flash properly. Unless you want the horns to be coded to pulse, you’d have to wire them to a different NAC.

Another example would be incandescent lamps. If they don’t have on-board flasher circuits, they would need to be coded by a panel in order to flash. Usually, they’re on the same NAC as the horns, but sometimes they’re wired separately.

Here’s a video showing a test of a Simplex 4005, showing separate audible and visible NACs. The horn NAC is coded to slow march time, and strobe and lamp NAC is coded to fast march time. The signals are Simplex 2901-9806 + 2903-9001 horn/lights, and 4903-9401 horn/strobes added in-between to provide strobe coverage.

Here’s another video (by Frankalarms39) showing a TrueAlert horn/strobe being coded by a SmartSync module.

Scott R. Sumpter Middle School which has 804 students.
The hallways have Simplex 2903 strobes+2901-9838 set to continuous tone

The mechanical drawing class, the only vocation education room to have a different alarm (the others have the above horn) has an Edwards 894-1B horn also in continuous

The art room has a continuous Simplex 4903-9219

The ESL (English Second Language) and the chorus classroom each have Gentex SHGs in continuous

The mechanical room which while attached to the building is only accessible from the outside has a Simplex TrueAlert in Code-3 (different NAC)

Also the media center has a Simplex 4903-9237 on the same NAC as the TrueAlert (Code-3)

Grayson High School

This one just came to me in a dream. It’s a pretty bizarre and diverse system. The original wing of the school was built in the early 1980’s. The school saw a huge expansion in the late 1990’s, and another wing was added in 2013. The FACP, located in the 90’s addition, is a Simplex 4020. The other wings are connected via 2190 ZAM’s and 4009 NAC extenders.

In the old wing, the smoke detectors are System Sensor 2W-B’s, which replaced the original ionization detectors. The pull stations are a mix of Simplex 4251-20’s and Honeywell S464A’s. The signals are Wheelock 7002-24’s, though the signal closest to the main wing was replaced by a newer 7002T. There is a 4603-9101 annunciator at this wing’s main entrance.

The gymnasium and auditorium have a very weird voice evac setup. There are Simplex 2902-9734 LifeAlarm speakers and 2904-9103 red remote strobes. There is a custom recording, which is an AC buzzer in code 3 followed by a Simplex 2001-style slow whoop. So it would sound like “BUZZ-BUZZ-BUZZ, WHOOP… BUZZ-BUZZ-BUZZ, WHOOP…”

Outside the auditorium are two more speakers, and two more strobes - one of which is a 2904, and the other of which is a System Sensor SR, set to 15 candela. Directly outside the gymnasium is an Edwards 890RDB-G5 light, and across the hall is a single Siemens S-HPMG-MCS speaker strobe.

The cafeteria has more Siemens S-HPMG-MCS’s. The kitchen has System Sensor 5601P fixed 135-degree heat detectors.

The main wing’s detectors are Simplex 2098-9201 photoelectric heads on 2098-9652 addressable bases. The pull stations are Simplex 2099-9795’s. The signals are mostly 4903-9219’s, but the signal nearest to the entrance is a Wheelock AS-24-MCW set to code 3.

In the new wing, there are more 2W-B’s. The pull stations are Notifier NBG-12L’s. The signals are Wheelock HSWC’s and STW’s. The horns are coded to code 3 by the Wheelock DSM sync module. There is another 4603 annunciator at this wings entrance.

FINALLY! I was wondering when this topic would get back on track and was afraid I would have to double-post.

This is the story of the Lani A. Price High School, which has room for 1000 students.
Simplex 4903-9219s are in all hallway and areas not listed

White Simplex 4903-9221s in the Wrestling Room and Electronics Room

Simplex 4903-9105+2901-9846s in the Chorus and Home Ec kitchen

Simplex 4051+Simplex 4050-80s in the Mechanical Room, Art and Health Room

Simplex TrueAlert set to code-3 on a different NAC in the Administrative Suite and the Auxiliary Gym

And Simplex 4903-9237s in the Media Center and Auditorium on the same NAC as the TrueAlerts on code-3

New Gibson Library

This 150-year-old library has a Simplex 4001 system. Zone 1 on the system is configured for coded pull stations. Zone 2 comprises normal detectors and pulls. When activated from Zone 2, the signals sound in continuous.

 • The detectors are Simplex 2098 Wiffleball-style photoelectric smoke detectors.

 • The pull stations in the lounge, movie rental, and faculty office section (the original building) are Simplex 4263-10 coded pull stations, though one of them was replaced by a 4251-20 (since it’s on Zone 1, the signals will stop sounding when the station is reset).

 • There’s also 4263 on the outside of the entrance to the old wing. Having exterior pull stations is very common in downtown New Gibson.

 • The pull stations in the main wing are Simplex 4251-20’s.

 • Most of the signals are Simplex 2903-9101’s with grille-less -9838’s. Some of them are mounted with the strobe on the bottom.

 • The restrooms have Simplex 4904-9105 remote strobes.

 • In one of the old wing’s back hallways, there is a lone Simplex 4067-41 4" vibrating bell left over from the old system.

 • The computer lab has a Simplex 4903-9101 with a -9838 on the wall, and two 4904-9103 remote strobes on the ceiling.

 • The downstairs, which contains the children’s section as well as a small art gallery, has two Simplex 4051’s on 4050-85 plates.

 • There’s a Simplex 2901-9806 (B4) on the outside of the building.

The Patricia Q. Coad Elementary School which houses 700 students is set up with these alarms throughout the school though it is a mostly Edwards/EST system though some of the alarms are different though most of the other equipment (pulls and detectors) are Edwards/EST.
Most of the school which is the hallways and some of the rooms that aren't mentioned here that need alarms are Edwards 894-1B electromechanical horn/strobes

The multipurpose room has 5 Edwards 792 electronic horn/strobes but since its in one big room they all sound the same

The resource classrooms have Simplex 9833s but 2 of them are on 4050-80 light plates and the other two are on 4903 light plates

The enrichment classroom and the project room both have Wheelock 34Ts on Space Age Electronics AV32 light plates

The computer lab has an Edwards 672-7A-HSR

The media center has an Edwards Genesis
Now we have the Daniel K. Rand Middle School
The main horns in the school are Edwards 892-2B that sound like Simplex 9219 which are in every area except where noted

The Administration suite hallways in the back of the main office where office staff have their rooms have Faraday U-HNHs

The Language Lab has a Space Age Electronics VA4 fire alarm which was put in because it was hard to hear the 892s when the door was shut

The Dressing Room hallway which is behind the stage in the gymnasium has 2 Simplex 2903+2901-9806s but they are on lamp plates that blinks

The Band room has a Vertical Wheelock AS in it which is set to code-3 horn

Finally the foyer which was redone has Edwards Integrities rather than the 892-2Bs the rest of the school has
Here are two schools that are in the same city but on opposite sides of it

Ponderosa High School (1410 students) first is set up like this:
Faraday 6120s with their own strobes are everywhere unless I say otherwise

The Electronics Lab has a particular rare alarm though. Its a Faraday 5940 behind that Unknown Faraday light plate that resemble the 4050-8X.

The Home Ec Kitchen has a Federal Signal 450 with a VALS strobe on it.

The Keyboarding Classroom has a Simplex 4903-9219 horn/strobe.

The Weight Training room and the Theater Arts lab where they make the scenes has a System Sensor Mass in 2400Hz Continuous but set to panel code-3.

Finally the health classroom and the music classroom has a Wheelock MT set to horn Code-3.
Standish-Bennett Elementary School (822 students) on the other hand is set up like this:
The hallway alarms are all Simplex 4051s on 4050-80s. But the ones in the Gymnasium after a ball demolished on of them were put on 4904-9101 retrofit plates.

The cafeteria also has some interesting alarms also. Rather than have the 4051s, the cafeteria which was added on back when the school used these alarms and never replaced or upgraded has Edwards 891D light plates with Edwards Adaptahorns on them. The light had the word “FIRE” on them and they blinked while the Adaptahorn was in continuous.

The Media Center has a Wheelock 7001.

The Resource Classroom has a Simplex 4903-9219.

The chorus room has a code-3 Simplex 4903-9252.

Finally the band room on the other end of the hallway has a Mircom FHS-240R Select-a-Horn/Strobe also in code-3.
The Thomas Edison Jr./Sr. High School, built in 1967, originally had a Simplex 4211 Fire Alarm System. The alarms were Simplex 4080-6 Bells in the hallways and in the library, and Simplex 4080-7 Bells in the gym, cafeteria, and auditorium. The pull stations were mostly Simplex rebranded Faraday Chevrons, along with older Simplex Heat Detectors. The panel also has the smoke detection system and there are older Simplex smokes throughout. Signal coding is 20 BPM March Time. For class change bells, they used Simplex 4040 Horns in the hallways and in the gym, cafeteria, and auditorium, Simplex Single Stroke Chimes in the library and some of the classrooms, and Simplex 4040s with projectors outside. They also had buzzers in the classroom clocks. Master Time panel was also by Simplex.

In 1972, a bell was found to be malfunctioning in the Jr. High Wing, that bell was replaced with a Faraday 6 Inch Bell. Also a Simplex 4521-20 Pull Station replaced a Simplex Chevron in the gym.

In 1979, a fire broke out in the band room. The original Bell and Pull station were replaced with a Simplex 2901-9332 and 4521-20 respectively. The class change bell was replaced with a Federal Signal 350 Horn. A Simplex Smoke Detector was also installed around this time.

In 1986, 2 portable classrooms were added. A Simplex 4001 was tied into the existing panel. The portables had a Simplex 2901-9806 Horn on a 2903 Strobe Plate, along with a Simplex 4521-20, and a Simplex Wiffleball Smoke Detector.

In 1992, the main FACP malfunctioned. The Simplex 4211 was replaced with a Simplex 4100 Panel. Many of the existing bells remained, but some were replaced with Simplex 2901-9332 Bells, and the ones in the gym were replaced with Simplex 2901-9333 Bells. They also added Simplex 4901-9105 Strobes pretty much everywhere on campus, the restrooms also gained the same strobes. Classrooms now have Gentex GXS Strobes. Several of the pull stations were replaced with Simplex 2099s, and new Simplex 2098 Smokes replaced the existing smoke detectors. ESL heat detectors were also installed. Signal coding is 20 BPM March Time. A sprinkler system was also installed around the same time, and the fire alarm panel was tied into the sprinkler system. Simplex also installed duct detectors. Around the same time, the clock, intercom, and bell system was replaced. The original clocks, chimes, and horns were removed. New digital clocks were installed, and new intercom speakers were installed throughout campus, and Atlas Sound Speakers were installed outside. The bell is now a 3-second tone over the intercom system. The intercom and master time system is a Telecor III.

In 1993, a Simplex 4080-6 in the library died, that was replaced with a Simplex 2901-9332. Also a Simplex 4904 broke, and was replaced with another Simplex 4904.

In 1995, two smoke detectors died. They were replaced with Simplex True Alarms. Also a Gentex GXS in the Jr High Wing strobe broke, and was replaced with a Wheelock RSS Strobe.

In 1996, the Simplex 4001 serving both portables shorted out. That panel was removed, and the Simplex 4100 panel was integrated with the existing devices in the portables. Also, Wheelock MT-WM Horn/Strobes replaced the existing Simplex Horn/Strobes in the portables.

In 1998, a Simplex Chevron was found to be malfunctioning. It was replaced with a Simplex 2099.

In 2001, a new wing, along with a new Jr. High Gym, was added onto the school. The main alarms there were Cerberus Pyrotronics U-HN-MCS Horn/Strobes in the hallways, most classrooms, the science labs, and the new gym and U-MCS Strobes pretty much everywhere that didn’t need a horn/strobe. Pull Stations were Cerberus Pyrotronics MSI20Bs. And CP ILP series smoke detectors were scattered throughout. As there was an elevator in the new addition, two System Sensor 2400 Smoke detectors were added at the elevator landings. Signal coding is 20 BPM march time. The panel is a Cerberus Pyrotronics MXL, which was tied into the existing Simplex 4100.

In 2003, a Simplex 2901-9333 was damaged by a dodgeball. That was replaced with a Wheelock MB10 bell.

In 2004, two Simplex Heat Detectors were found to be inoperative. They were replaced with ESL Heat Detectors. Also, two Gentex GXS Strobes died. They were replaced with Simplex TrueAlert Remote Strobes.

In 2006, two teachers said they couldn’t hear the fire alarms from their classroom. That problem was solved by installed a Wheelock NS Horn/Strobe in three classrooms to replace the Gentex GXS.

In 2009, a Simplex 4080-6 Bell malfunctioned and was not audible. That was replaced with a Wheelock ZNH Horn.

In 2011, the school was due for a fire alarm and clock/intercom upgrade. Both the existing Simplex 4100 and CP MXL systems were removed. The new fire alarm system is now a Notifier NFS2-3030 with DVC. The new alarms are Wheelock HSR Horn/Strobes, mainly installed in the classrooms, hallways, office, library, and other areas, and Wheelock STR strobes installed everywhere that didn’t need horn/strobes. Wheelock E70 Speaker/Strobes were installed in both gyms, the cafeteria, and auditorium. The new pull stations are Notifier NBG-12LX, and the new smokes are Notifier FSP series. The existing heat detectors and duct detectors remained and were tied into the new system. Signal coding is now Temporal-3 for horn/strobes, and a Temporal Whoop tone and a voice evac message for the speaker/strobes. The existing Telecor intercom system was removed. The new intercom and clock system is a Rauland Telecenter MCS. The bell is now a 530 HZ chime tone over the intercom.
