I hate to follow the trend of hating new notification appliances, but it definitely looks weird. Also, I love it that companies are making addressable NAs
Ngl it reminds me of European devices
Good find! Never thought the day when Siemens got back into the notification appliance part of the life safety industry would come! (with non-rebranded ones that is) Wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that Wheelock finally stopped making the Z-series for Siemens a few years ago (well, either that or Siemens themselves stopping production if they were the ones still making the Z-series, which actually may have been to make way for these brand-new devices now that I think about it).
I don’t know about the square or horn devices, but the round & speaker devices look nice. Funny how the square-shaped devices resemble Simplex’s TrueAlert some (or at least the shape of the covers does).
I used to do that but with this and the Commander 5, I liked them out of the gate. The Acend has a European feel but they aren’t as ugly as the LED L-Series In my opinion.
Siemens received UL listings for new these notification appliances in early July (see this post). Although the listings in that post do not include audible-only devices, horn-only devices can be found here.
Unfortunately, this also appears to be the end of 4-wire notification appliances for Siemens, as both the horn strobes and low frequency sounder strobes only have one set of terminals.
Also, note that the datasheets do not mention synchronization with the DSC module. This may mean there is a new sync protocol to avoid patent infringement.
Considering that that’s the direction every other manufacturer that makes NAs has gone in (aside from hopefully Gentex) that’s honestly not surprising, though you mean to tell me that up until now they still had 4-wire horn/strobes? (since last I checked all models of Wheelock’s Z-series are 2-wire: Wheelock jumped on that bandwagon years in advance of it actually being a bandwagon)
Guess Siemens knows not to make the same mistake that Faraday (for some reason) did.
I watched the promotional video on the website and it says that these new NA’s are backwards compatible.
According to the website, these new NA’s manage to have 35% lower current draw than the SL2 series (Wheelock Eluxa’s). That’s a very impressive jump if it’s true.
It also says that the horns will have 10 tones! That’s a lot.
I felt the same way at first, but they are already starting to grow on me.
Here’s the informational flyer:
They also specify that these are a breakthrough in conventional notification. Does this mean that they are working on addressable notification too? If so, will it work with the FireFinder XLS? That panel is over 20 years old so I wouldn’t be surprised if they came out with something else. It is still a very capable panel, though.
The SL2MTS multitone horns were 4-wire, just like the Wheelock ELMTS horns.
Most of these tones have the same name as the MT tones. The 2 new tones are “Code 4 Tone” and “Canadian March Time 30.”
These are some of the better looking LED NAs I’ve seen, not that it matters. What matters is if it beeps and flashes.
Neat! I personally think the ceiling units look the best.
Also nobody seems to be talking about the fact that Siemens will offer them in custom colors if you desire. Certainly a unique option. (No, that image wasn’t edited.)
The XLS just turns into the Modular panel with a firmware upgrade and potentially a new display/CPU. It’s not going anywhere
That is! Wonder how they managed it if the Eluxa-series itself is already LED (& thus already has quite a drop in current consumption).
Oh, okay, cool. Not sure if Siemens rebranded them prior to stopping usage/production of the Z-series though.
Huh. Going by that the new appliances will have the MT’s tones plus maybe a few others for just about every application, so I guess Siemens will still be associated with Wheelock in some way!
The ceiling devices generally resemble Eluxa devices, and the speakers have the same 300-8000 Hz frequency response as the Eluxa speakers, so it is possible that the hardware is modified from Wheelock. This also raises the question of whether the low frequency sounders will produce a similar raspy tone.
I haven’t seen how these are assembled yet, but I’m wondering if the unconventional design of the appliance is intended to function the same way that the Commander5 appears to, with the device electronics being the same SKU and just a dress plate to modify them for either wall or ceiling use. If that’s the case, it should make these cheaper to produce without needing to reduce the build quality of the device, since there will only be two sets of electronics, one for sounder and one for speaker.
Good concept/idea: that should help reduce the number of different models & thus both how many the company themselves will need to make & the inventory that service companies & distributors will have to carry.
Also nobody seems to be talking about the fact that Siemens will offer them in custom colors if you desire.
Edward’s also does this with the LED Genesis
Are there outdoor appliances?
Outdoor appliances aren’t mentioned on this brochure. Based on this page, Siemens also does not sell rebranded outdoor Eluxa devices.
However, the “Notification appliances” category has now been renamed to “Notification appliances Legacy,” indicating that the ACEND series will probably replace all of these devices in the near future.
All of the devices in this series begin with the “SC” prefix, which might be to indicate that the device is conventional. I searched for the Siemens “SA” on UL Product IQ but did not find any notification appliances.
