Weather Woes Vol. 3

It’s snowing lightly in the Metro Detroit area right now; roughly 2-5" of snow are expected this evening. In addition, all of southeastern Michigan is under a Winter Weather Advisory until midnight tonight.

Where I live, it we got completely dumped with snow. It looks like a winter wonderland outside! I don’t know how much exactly, but it looks like its at least a foot.

I don’t have school today for that reason, and I will probably be out shoveling sometime today.

Schools were closed here too, but most businesses remain open. We got about 8" of fluffy white snow, which was pretty much what was predicted.

I’ve been outside a few times and it looks like we have had quite a bit. I haven’t measured it beause its still snowing! I would guess that we have at least 16 inches so far.

It seems we have some extra moisture left over in the atmosphere, as it’s been snowing for the past couple of hours and as a result, is adding to the snowfall amounts. At about 6:15, we had about 9.25" and the bursts are expected to last for several more hours, so I see us going over 10" in a little while. Fortunately, it’s light and fluffy so it’s easily shovelable and plowable, unlike my friends down south towards NYC who are complaining that their snow is heavy due to the warmer temps (it’s only 23 here right now, close to 30 down towards the city).

Much to my surprise, we got a little dusting of snow last night! The fresh snow on the sidewalks and/or roads was all gone by mid-morning/afternoon (the snow from the bigger storm on Sunday/Monday is still, for the must part, here, but I wasn’t expecting that at all!

Another week another storm (one of two, actually). We’re looking at an onset of snow which could accumulate to roughly 3"-6", and then a changeover to sleet and freezing rain. In my area, they’re anticipating .1"-.3" of ice, but down south they’re anticipating .3"-.5", which is usually enough to bring down powerlines, and checking WWLP, Massachusetts could get even more ice than that. To those in Massachusetts, take precautions now and charge up everything now while you can!

Arrghhh! Not this sh** again! Oh well, we still have our generator from the last ice storm. This really sucks, why must we be the constant target of this crap! The worst part is that my spring semester starts tomorrow, nice for it all to be complicated by nature.

Oh yeah, and I read something about a possible snow event late in the week, but it looks like a lot of things will have to come together for that one. Obviously too early to really tell.

We got roughly 4.75" of snow with at least .25" of ice in top of it. Our sidewalk is now totalle frozen over in ice and with the temps forecasted this week (only 9 on Monday with double-digit below zero low temps), it won’t go away anytime soon. We got another 6.75" just from a clipper system that moved through late last night and through this morning. What’s more, there’s another storm in the forecast for Tuesday night-Thursday and right now it’s looking it could be a pretty big one. I must say, the snow in the area from shoveling and plowing is now up to my waist and it’s so high, you can’t see through intersections anymore. IDK where they’re going to put all of this snow that still has yet to come. I must say, we’ve gotten 1-2 storms PER WEEK ever since Christmas. I’m getting tired of shoveling…

A high chance of snow for us tomorrow, in addition to old man winter’s freezing assault; wind chills have already made temperatures below zero in Livonia!

Well, this winter has started to become a huge pain in the ass. Every storm that we’ve had has brought at least 8" of snow. Let’s see, I think we’re close to 40" total as of today. Now to look forward to next weeks storm…

As for where we are going to put the snow, I have no idea. We have a couple of really big mounds of snow from where the plow leaves it when we have our driveway cleared. We’re talking mounds the size of those ones you see in mall parking lots. Every time you try and add more snow to it, it just rolls right back down! Oh yeah, and let’s not forget those low temps this weekend…

Yes, according to records we are currently in position for the 8th snowiest January on record. Including today, we’re at 31.1". With a heavy to major storm expected next week (8"-12" or greater), we can easily be placed into the top 3. The NORMAL for January is only 16" and just as a reference, last year we only got 45.4" for the whole season. This season thus far, we’re already at 44.1"! We’re running out of places to put the snow and with the BITTERLY cold temperatures, it’s not expected to melt anytime soon.

The wind is making it so much worse. The snow drifts like crazy around here. I live near some open fields and when the wind kicks up…watch out! The road has to be plowed at least 5 times after the snow has stopped falling.

Plows are a pain here. Because of my location, we’re usually the last street to be plowed, which means after we’ve dug ourselves out, the plow comes by and plows us back in. Fortunately this year we have a snowblower, which makes things A LOT easier and we also have nice neighbors, one of whom has a plow on his truck and he comes by and plows the end of our driveway free of snow. The snow blows around a lot here too (my backyard is practically a wind tunnel), but nothing to that big of an effect.

It’s a bit chilly here in Pittsburgh, around 5 degrees. It’s not as bad as back home in MA or upstate New York where my sister is (-20 with the wind chill).

It got down close to -20 without the windchill last night out here. At 9:30 AM its still -3.

It’s nearly 1 PM here and we just made it to 0! My thermometer said we went as far as -15 last night, but it may have been a few degrees colder than that as my thermometer was a bit warmer than reporting stations. Still watching the storm threat for later this week…

After a frigid freeze for the weekend with wind chills below zero, we’re getting a warm up from our good friend mother nature; it’s around 20 degrees right now, although factoring in the wind chill makes it feel like 9 degrees…

Much to my surprise, when I woke up, it was snowing! But when I came outside, there was a already a big break in the clouds, and within an hour or so after that, it stopped.

My area lucked out on this one, as we’re only forecasted to get some flurries. New England is supposed to get a decent amount of snow again. Next storm is forecasted for Saturday and is expected to dump a lot more than some flurries on my area…
